Am hoping I can tap into the knowledge of this forum to arrange a trip to New Zealand! I am going to do a 3 month internship as part of my PhD, and for this I would like to go to New Zealand and get some experience of large animal work

Re: New Zealand

Too soon Malcolm, too soon.

Re: New Zealand
Vets are on the long term skills shortage list, so visa and work permit should be no problem
He's in small animal practice and doesn't really have LA contacts any more unfortunately, but he did suggest Franklin vets who are a mixed practice covering a wide area with several clinics. Website is franklinvets.co.nz

Re: New Zealand

Many thanks for the suggestions!

Re: New Zealand

Sadly, I agree with the comment above that you are better off going in the Southern hemisphere winter for large animal work - spring calving followed by mating. Pregnancy testing would be jan/feb/march depending on whereabouts you go.

For registration, look here:

http://www.vetcouncil.org.nz/gainReg.php

Vets are on the long term skills shortage list, so visa and work permit should be no problem

http://www.immigration.govt.nz/

Not uncommon for practices to take on spring locums for the busy period. +1 vote for the Bay of Plenty area if you don't like cold weather (I spent two years there).

Re: New Zealand

I would echo the comment regarding Paddy Currall. Lovely lady who would be able to sort locum work for you.

Re: New Zealand

you have a better chance of getting work in august/september/ october as this is their calving season in north island , a month behind in south island, in my practice when i was there even the small animal vets were out doing calvings as it was busy. december and january very quite for locum work . paddy currall might sort you out, do a google search or she advertises in vet record , a well known locum agent out there and knows all the practices . watch the pay rates in 2003 i was paid 250 dollars a day , i was going to back in 2008 and they were offering 450 dollars a day for locum.

cheers

Re: New Zealand

I used to work for Manawatu Veterinary Services in Feilding, near Palmerston North in the North Island. Think the team may have changed a lot but we had good clients and a range of animals dealt with at a large clinic and regularly had students and others seeing practice. Worth trying to contact them. Think they are called totally vets now:
