From the HSE website:

Do I have to consult a Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA)?

If you are an employer working with ionising radiation (a ‘radiation employer’), you will need to consult a suitable Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA). Any RPA consulted should conform to the definition of an RPA as described in HSE’s criteria of competence and should be suitable in terms of possessing the requisite knowledge and experience relevant to the employer’s type of work.

Before you spend a lot of money ask yourself if you actually need an external RPA. If you take less than a certain amount of X-rays and don't use a horizontal beam there is no need to engage one. I don't know the figures off hand anymore but I know that as sole charge taking a couple of plates a week on average I am way below. That' not to say you may not wish to engage one for peace of mind. I did the same as I registered with the Environmental Health Agency even though I don't produce enough clinical waste to require this.

He came up to middle of Yorkshire Dales for us. Seemed fine, but perhaps a bit expensive for the time taken.
