I am about to leave to do my first triathlon of the season and will be wearing a tri suit which is less flattering than cycling Lycra! Though so cold have packed lots of layers and wil,decide when get there what to put on when out of pool. My drug taking will consist of some brufen for my back and a puff on inhaler for pollen which is still around even with cold. Maybe horse racing need British Olympic association to run their drug testing !

Out of race testing with horses identchipped to avoid "confusion" between two different horses. Randomly selected with penalties for avoiding the tests. Not easy but depends how seriously the issue is to be taken.

[/quote] Yup, Cyclists have a 'whereabouts rule' and have to declare where they will be for one hour every day 365, no exceptions, so that the drug testers can turn up unannounced out of competition, three missed tests and you're out. Perhaps the whereabouts rule should apply to horses and while we're at it - do they have a biological passport? Once again there seems to be a discrepancy in culpability related to how much money is in the sport. Cycling is a Cinderella sport even in Europe compared to horse racing, football, tennis, basketball etc so its easy to blame and ends up being the scapegoat. Money induces the 'three wise monkey syndrome': closes eyes, buys silence and immunity from investigation.

when in race track practice in Canada (many years ago) laurabolin was just part of the routine, like feed. the only arguments I remeber was how old they should be to start. any NA listers? do they still use like that? we used to also use it in 2/3/4 yo futurity horses. that must have stopped?

Back in the day, when men were men and women were silently grateful, there were two vets in a large metropolitan area, a long way away from Newmarket, who were known in the trade as "Doctor Needle and Doctor Spear"

Things got embarrassing when, at a leading metropolitan track, on a day including, what are now Group 1 races, in a supporting race for geldings and mares, the six geldings were paraded with very obvious male genitalia rampant.

And there is a true story, 'cos he told me, of a well known trainer who took two champion horses across to a country not as far away as his, met a lovely lady, and, being of advancing years, injected himself with some of his "horse stuff" and claimed he couldn't turn over in bed for some days...

Ah, those were the days...... it's all so scientific now!.

All pro sport is corrupt to some degree, I believe.[/quote] Manuel Fuentes(of Operation Puerto blood transfusion case) used his 'client's' pet's names as a code in some instances, most notably Ivan Basso was Borillo, the name of his dog I believe. Perhaps some of them weren't pets after all and the animals themselves were the clients. There were footballers, tennis players, basketball players in the list amongst the cyclists, I wonder if there were any horses?

They don't need the EPO anyway. As far as I know they just draw off a couple of litres of blood, spin it down, extract the RBCs and inject them back in IV. Just like the South American cyclists...

They can get that wrong as wellTyler Hamilton in is book talks about riders getting he wrong blood back or poorly stored and being a bit sick as a result Oops! Thing is, stable owners could give epo but not do a transfusion without veterinary hands-on. All pro sport is corrupt to some degree, I believe.

[/quote]Funny you should mention it but....the Matt cartoon in The Telegraph (yesterday I believe) featuring two people standing a yard saying, 'I see a Godolphin horse has won the Tour de France' (or words to that effect - my memory is a bit short these days).

PS anyone noticed my Lance Armstrong quote has finally disappeared, I thought a quote from Zen Dog may make a change!

I rather like the moderating influence of lay people on our DC. It brings the punishments meted out by RCVS more in line with the real world. It was getting stuck in some cruel antediluvian era, which some feel the need to cling to.

OMG do I sound like a record stuck in the groove?

I would suspect anabolic steroids will have come from an illegal source and the veterinary input will be absent (hopefully) or undocumented and off the record.

I am sure this is a case that will end with abject apology and will disappear soon enough as a news story, especially if the punters get their stakes back. Money talks and massive amounts of money can bring silence!!

My bet is silence from all in the veterinary world.
