Does anyone know of any good practical surgery courses? Not anything advanced or ortho-related, just basic soft tissue and surgical principles. Most of the courses I've found don't offer any kind of practical aspect.
Cheers,
Kat :-)

Re: Anyone know any good surgery CPD?

Improve CPD do a range of surgery practical CPDs. There are also some good DVDs you get with techniques and proceedings along with it, or you can get the DVDs from Howard Seim's videovet website.

I did the improve surgery practicals and found them really useful, and find the dvds useful for revision/refresher if not done something for a while- it has given me alot more confidence in doing many different soft tissue sx procedures

It was an XLvets CPD so if your practice is part of that group it's definitely worth going if they run it again. I think Liverpool Uni do the same course as part of their CPD programme but it's more expensive that way. The course was a good mix of lectures and lots of practical stuff. We did enterectomies, enterotomies, multiple versions of GDV surgery (although Rachel Burrow just recommends incisional pexy), placed chest drains and practised splenectomies. Admittedly cadaver surgery is never going to be the same as operating for real. I've done a reasonable amount of surgery but don't really enjoy it so I found it really useful. Rachel was really nice and had lots of tips. Good anatomy revision if nothing else!

Re: Anyone know any good surgery CPD?

Hi Kat,

I haven't been on any practical courses myself but I know that cpd solutions do some practical surgery courses, I've been eyeing up this one:

https://cpdsolutions.infusionsoft.com/app/storeFront/showProductDetail?productId=2403

Don't know if they're any good but I know what you mean- I don't get any real surgical teaching where I work and I'd like to have a go at enterotomies/GDV's etc on a cadaver with a bit of help before attempting one solo!

Do BSAVA not do any practical courses?

Holly

Re: Anyone know any good surgery CPD?

Kat - this is what neutering is for. There is only so much theory it is far more about doing and dealing with what presents (bleeding etc).

Even cadaver surgery is somehow far removed from the real animal, the tissues feel and handle differently. Nothing bleeds.

What is it you want to learn? If you are a new grad or coming back after a break a spell in a neutering clinic is great experience.

If you can spay a bitch then you can do most over general practice abdominal surgery. Ortho has it's own skill set, but the tissue handling, etc still just the same.
