We have an annual weekend meeting in the Autumn - this year it's in Manchester. In November 2012 we held a one day practical basic External Fixation course at a heavily subsidised rate - pitched at the beginner level to attract new members to BVOA. This was very successful and so we are planning another this year on plates and screws (practical with dry lab equipment and all the committee members there to advise and give talks). If you can wait that long, it might be the day for you!

Re: Practical Orthopaedics Courses

I went on a couple of good practical Improve courses (the last one was their ESF course) which had a good amount of cadaver surgery. Also worth considering is going and spending some time with a orthopaedic surgeon.

Re: Practical Orthopaedics Courses

Thanks for the replies. I'm looking at the basic/beginners as they cover the things we usually see - similar to Rob. As in a previous thread they are things I got "sort of " taught many years ago and have muddled along but it's time to brush up skills and confidence.

In our case it's more cruciates, luxating patellae and pinning/wiring/ex-fix, rather than plating and pelvic fractures, though YMMV

Re: Practical Orthopaedics Courses

Hi Kath,

You might be interested in a course we are running on 15th May with Jon Mills from West Midlands Referrals. It will concentrate mainly on locking plates and Jon is going to pitch it at a level that should be OK for beginners and also people with some orthopaedic skills. There will be a couple of practical sessions during the day and you will be able to take home the kit you use!

At the moment I am not sure of the price because of all the kit that will be included, it is only recently we have had the offers from a couple of companies to provide it, but it will be around the £4-500 mark. You can see more details here: http://www.vcpd.co.uk/courses.php , or give me a ring!
