May be I am getting more squeamish as I get older or more aware of the risks of me picking up infection or passing on a resistant bug. I have to say the nurses are turning more green with every post from Mr Herriot Lied!

As time goes on I use them more and more. With the large animal work I put a pair on when I get out of the car. For calving I wear a pair of nitrile gloves over arm length gloves.

It's as much about me staying clean. If I then have to go somewhere civilised after work or need to dive into a cow caeser after a cleansing I don't need to worry.

I wear them with small animals for teeth, wounds, abscesses, smelly dogs etc. Even something that is brought in with diarrhoea. Nitrile stand up to snags (teeth, burrs, foot trimming) much better than latex.

The local spot we get them from charges us less per box than the wholesalers want for latex.

We even sell them to farmers for milking.

We use powder free latex. I use them to protect myself from puss and smells (yes, anal sacs for example!) and to protect my patients if they have wounds. I recently attended a lecture on hygiene and one thing was made very very clear. You cannot scrub your hands as clean as even non-sterile gloves are. So gloves are protective for both parties and as no one here is allergic to latex so far and we agree that the other materials suck we will stick to them for the time being.

We have been using the powder free latex for years now with no problem and reading through the NHS guidelines, there has never been a reported problem with using them, unless the person had an allergy before. I will continue to use them as usual unless a new member of staff has a specific problem.

I'll wear gloves when dealing with any wound, not so much to protect me, to protect my patients. I like to think my hand washing etc are good, but I would hate to put something like MRSA into an open wound (mum and sister both human nurses, both routinely swab positive for it. Brother was in hospital for a routine op not long ago and his pre-op swabs were also positive, so the odds of me not carrying are pretty slim!) Anything gross (anal glands etc) gets gloves to protect me!!! We use latex ones, been in practices where other options avail but only for chemotherapy (nitrile) or if someone specifically has an allergy Jenny P.s. sorry if formatting lost, I'm on the iPad

Oh, that's no problem: I bite my nails continually.

Last week, I went from one farm to the next for a fertility session; on the second place, I couldn't find any rectal gloves in the van, so just carried on. I went back to the first place today, where they gave me the box of gloves back with a lot of sniggering. I said I didn't really mind, but the taste and smell on my sandwiches after doing a couple of cleansings had been almost off-putting.

Anyway, back on topic....... I perhaps read the OP wrong, as I thought it implied that one wore gloves just in order to see patients. I can only imagine what some of our posher cat owners would think of that.

Might be something to think about, in that case.

Setting the universal revulsion from everyone here aside at the idea of emptying anal glands without gloves, I do wear gloves a lot more than I did but don't routinely.

The NHS link was good so with immediate effect there will be no more powdered latex gloves ordered (not sure if there are any one the premises anyway!).

Ergh. I just don't want that pong lingering. A bit of Lubrel prevents discomfort to the patient.

We have some white nitrile gloves which are fine, but mostly still use latex (powder free)

I have bright pink 'Breast Cancer Awareness' latex gloves which are a great topic for conversation! We have nitrile gloves as well.

We use nitrile exclusively. They are excellent quality, good dexterity, better 'feel' cf vinyl and very very tough.

We get them from here and they are excellent value for money.
