Nortnern RSPCA are a bit strapped for cash, but this latest return has mad my blood boil.
Saw a swan during the day (not during normal consulting times), charged a normal consult fee and injection fee. Have now received a letter

Re: RSPCA and daytime attendance
Don't all swans belong to the Queen.
Our practice policy is that all wild animals are dealt with at no cost to the public when presented by a member of the public. In fact we deal with stray cats and dogs on a similar basis - we seem to be the non funded out of hours dog warden.

However, I have had dealings with the RSPCA, police and local council where they have asked us to attend animals (including owned, strays and wild animals) at all hours and have expected us to do this for nothing.

Yeterday was the straw that broke the camels back.

It is not so much that I object to dealing with these things for free, it is that organisations expect us to, and will use the guide to professional conduct to force us to (this is highlighted in the MOU, which I had forgotten about until yesterday).

Mrs Barbour-Hill you are of course right, my practice (not me) accepted the call, and as such we will have to live with it. But the (what seemed to me) high handed note received with the return invoice did not help.

Anyway, I have sent the letter, I shall where the cookie falls, but in all likelihood it will be more hassle than its worth to pursue this.

Chris

Re: RSPCA and daytime attendance

It's a Memorandum of Understanding (which the BVA are a very suitable organisation to negotiate), not a Contract. Personally, I stick to it, but I wish the RSPCA would also stick to it (we have had threads before about their way of reneging upon it).

No veterinary surgeon is actually bound by it, if he cares to state other terms.

Mr. Burch, if you truly were "advised at the time that treatment would be free" I'm afraid you've accepted that.

Veterinary surgeons are generally and on the whole expected as a professional obligation to provide simpler treatments (the vet. to have the decision as to what treatment will be given) to most wildlife without charging anybody This is not something laid down by the RSPCA, it's always been a traditional obligation.

Nobody seems to have thought of swans when codifying this. I think personally that they are so large, messy, potentially tricky to handle and expensive to dispose of when dead that they should be considered more like the larger mammals.

If the swan were already in care in a RSPCA establishment and you were asked to treat it, the MOU would not apply.
May I suggest that all members who are contacted by the RSPCA in future clear before they are seen who will be responsible for any fees, and not allow themselves to be dictated to by the RSPCA.
Sound advice, of course.

Re: RSPCA and daytime attendance
Actually as far as I understand the BVA collectively agreed to FOC treatment hence Zi assume that only BVA members are bound by it.
