Uhhh, I'm inclined to jump on a plane, we had minus nine this morning when I went to work (Northern Germany), a bit of snow on the ground and more to come tonight/tomorrow

Here in Vienna (where contrary to popular opinion we don't usually get a lot of snow - the city is on the plains rather than the alps) we currently have a foot of snow and a maximum temp of minus 4 expected today (they don't tell us the minimum temp - I assume around minus 10!)

I don't think the UK snow is a myth though - plenty in my hometown.....I think it's just the south not getting any as usual

On call last night and tried to make it home after stitch up and failed miserably. For once my trusty golf failed me although to be fair snow was over 8 inches and still falling. Husband phoned to say had to abandon 4x4 and walk last 2 miles home. Decided at that point to turn around and annoy nurse at hospital all night instead. My dogs found it great fun to pile under blankets on sofa with me for the night as usually spend it in the kitchen at home. As always according to the law of sod had not more calls last night

After strong coffee, choc digestive and morning surgery starting to feel a little more human. Remains to be seen how far I get before bailing to walk rest of way home later on.

On a 'fun run' of 3 branches today - the first up in the Rossendale valley, where they had about a foot of snow and drifts. Passing abandoned cars left and right, tried to park my little C1 in the nearest car park, got stuck and had to dig myself out. Then spent half an hour driving up and down the road finding a suitable place to abandon it and walk to work.

In places the snow was above my doorsills!

I used to do coastguard cliff rescue, and I've dealt with a few dead bodies; I know something of how you must be feeling. I suspect, from your postings, that you'll deal with it yourself, but feel free to PM me if you do want to have a chat.

Glad you're safe; I was driving home from Leeds on the A1 last week and after being passed left, right, and centre by high speed crazies in overpriced cars, I stopped to render first aid at a freshly wrecked Micra. I have no idea if she was forced off the road, lost control, shunted, or just...happened; the road was straight (and very slick and snowy) and the driver was dead. No other car at the scene of the accident except a few other drivers who stopped with me to help. (Yes, there are good, kind, and decent people out there, and they are Jon, Elinor, Dave, and an HGV driver whose name I didn't catch!)

About 15cm up here tonight and still going. It has just taken me 5 hours to get from SPVS congress, most of that time spent on the last 30 miles. The M6, M62, M60 & M66 are terrible, 10 - 20 mph and the M61 was shut. They were gritting the motorways but it was no use without a snow plough in front. How there weren't any accidents is incredible and every driver seemed to be taking it very steady and carefully. Let's hope no-one asks for a home visit!

I get everywhere around Tenbury Wells (very up and down lanes) in my 15 year old smart car with snow chains. Wonderful. In Mozambique I used them on my 2cv in deep loose sand, worked too.

Well I had one today - 'I need a house visit for my sick dog as I can't get off my road'. When asked by the receptionist how the vet was supposed to get to them, the answer was 'well don't they have a 4x4?' That comment meant I charged them a bit more - afterall, I have to save up for my new car...!!!!

when i worked up in the north east of Scotland we had winter tyres, and they made getting around so much easier - we would have snow for a good 2-3 months of the year so you needed them. not to mention they kept the roads properly clear. now i live in the midlands i really miss them on those rare occasions when it snows down here.

Snow socks I've never used them, but I gather the cheaper ones don't last very long.

As a quick fix rope or several runs of bale twine can be threaded through and tied, 3 sets on each drive axle.

Back in my HGV days all trucks on continental runs would be fitted with winter tyres and carry snow chains and wheel chocks. Those on UK only work were not, as it was not deemed economical.
