Sorry to post as Anon. 'Things' are currently getting to me in a big way and I am trying to be pro-active and find alternatives to clinical work at this stage. Not sure if that will make things easier, but I do think it will remove a few 'pressure

Re: Other use of a Vet Degree

Feel free to contact me if you want to know anything about industry. I have done technical and marketing and have worked with lots of reps who have been vets.

That comment suggests that you might not be cut out for the secret services. Even Arlo wouldn't claim that vetsurgeon.org was that private and secure!

Re: Other use of a Vet Degree

Thanks for the input so far, it is all food for thought (love in particular the MI5 one! Watch this space for details :) ) I do have varied interests. Outside of work I do love all sorts of sports and was even thinking of going along those lines (not sure personal trainer will be enough to keep me entertained for long). Or yes, going down the line of eg pathology or something, I do find that very interesting. Industry is an option, but am not entirely sure that I am the right candidate for that.

Will spend the non-working time on the weekend evaluating my options a bit more. But then again - lots of snow to go running/ sledging/ cycling in :))

Thanks again for all suggestions so far

Re: Other use of a Vet Degree

As others have said think about what interests you because there is a wide variety of things you could consider. Does all clinical work get you down or just elements of it? I got frustrated by some elements of first opinion practice and so have gone into specialist practice and started a residency programme.

Agricultural colleges, nursing training, extension work or training the extension workers, etc.

All depends if you like to work with people and like training or teaching people.

What are your interests?

You are limiting your options by just considering it a veterinary degree. You have the same choices anyone else with a good degree has (probably a better candidate than many!).

Perhaps look at things from a different perspective. Do something unrelated and consider keeping your hand in with some part-time veterinary work if you want to.

You are very well educated and even in a difficult financial climate the world is you oyster!

With the increase in veterinary graduate number it is going to be quite usual for a large number to do non-veterinary related jobs.

Re: Other use of a Vet Degree

Hi

I'm a mature (vetmed) student and work part-time for a pharmaceutical company, so maybe I can help a bit. I studied Animal Science before VetMed so that's how I got my job in pharma but we have lots of vets working for us. It all depends on what you want to do - obviously there are jobs in marketing (reps) but there are also vets with clinical experience required in pharmacovigilance (dealing with adverse events etc), medical affairs and info (they tend to go to conferences, prepare papers and present things at conferences and meetings), medical directors in clinical R&D, as well as preclinical R&D - animal testing drugs before they go into human (clinical) trials. My company mainly makes humans drugs and biologics but all the jobs I have mentioned employ vets as well as medical doctors. I work as a clinical medical writer - I write reports and papers on clinical R&D trials. Medical directors in clinical R&D are involved in the planning, safety assessment and then final analysis of these studies. Different companies do though have different roles for the same job title

Of course the grass is always greener on the other side and I am studying vetmed so that I can escape the daily office grind and corporate BS

My thinking is that I can always go back to pharma if I need to (I have 10+ yrs experience in this field) but I need to get out of the office for a bit!

Good luck

Re: Other use of a Vet Degree

I have a part time job with a veterinary magazine as a writer.
