Just wondering if anyone on the forums had completed the RVC internship or the Junior clinical training scholarship in small animal ?
Any thoughts or ideas on an internship after 1 year in general small animal practice?

Re: RVC internship

Hi Adrienne

I haven't done one, but graduated from RVC and have been back to the QMH (too many times) since - and can tell you it is an amazing place to learn.

Don't be put off by Michael, he's into farm work!

If you want to do a residency this is an essential stepping stone, and I think 1 year in practice is fine!

Probably the internship does depend a bit on what you are planning to do afterwards?

Re: RVC internship

I can't rave about it enough. I found it fantastic and would recommend to any vet regardless of future ambition. For a new grad, the salary is on level with what you earn in practice and includes free accommodation. Hours also better than most internships with never more than 12 hour days and always 2 consecutive days off per week (or at least this was the case in 2005).

If you are keen I would urge you to think out exactly why you want to do the internship as there is a lot of competition and this is an important deciding factor for those recruiting. In my view one of the best internships about.

Re: RVC internship

I'm a 2011 RVC grad. The interns seemed to do a lot of first opinion OOH work, so I guess if that's something you think you'll enjoy go for it. Having spoken to friends who have done internships in private practice it seems like their case load is generally higher (I remember surgery in particular not being a busy service at RVC).

I guess it depends what you want to do, ECC wise then a good internship, surgery it's probably worth looking at other options

If you see yourself going down the diploma holder route then it is really the fastest way, and as you work up the ladder there is time given for study etc (certainly for residents). They pay peanuts so most seem to get their cert/diploma and then go and make the money back in private practice.

You could be very well qualified in 5 years.

I can't think of much worse! I hated the QMH.
