And I'll give another vote for John Sower (Bertram & Kidson)

He's the only accountant that I've ever met that doesn't make my head start spinning when talking figures.

He was instrumental in a massive change for the better with my (then) ailing practice. Without him I would not now be living in the South of France, running my clinics from afar.

I've spoken to Phil before and found him to be very helpful. We moved over to Hazelwoods a few years back after finishing with a local accountant that wasn't vet specific. One of the best moves we've ever made.

Try and find one who gives the sort of proactive advice that we do.

One that tells you what to do to minimise tax and plan your finances as we do with vaccination, worming, spaying etc and not just an expensive bookkeeper that just processes the stuff presented to him or her. If accountants were vets they'd just do what the client wanted, no good advice at all, and many of them are like that.

If I had been told to employ my wife [who did the wages, phone and reception etc.] I would have saved a fortune, to give a good example. Wives are taxed separately which I wasn't told either......

And get a quote for fees before the work is started! Amazing how it can vary and not in proportion to the tax you save either.

We have started to use Rob Hitch of Dodd & Co and so far he seems to be far better than our last accountant. I suppose it depends on how aggressive you want to be with tax avoidance / reducing your bill. Starbucks have some decent accountants but a lousy PR department.

We use John Sower of Bertram Kidston. He seems to know his onions and does a lot of vets work.

Speak to a Mr Jimmy Carr, his is pretty good as far as I understand
