Hi everyone,

Well, they made me a very reasonable offer off the bat and I have taken the job! It feels rather odd to be actually employed after four years of being a locum!

A friend of mine as a full time locum GP was earning about £60,000 a year a couple of years ago, which seemed quite reasonable to me.

Just done a quick calculation, and never really appreciated the amount of difference before. For the cost to the practice to remain the same, the gross daily rate would be about £200/day compared to a locum rate of £250. 20% less.

1 day per week and 1/2 day every other saturday as a locum = 65 days per year at £250 = £16250.

factor in and deduct employers NIC of 13.8% = £14280.

factor in and deduct locum fee of £250/day for holiday cover (4 days and 2 x 1/2 days per annum =£1250) = £13030.

£13030 :- 65 days = £200 gross

Of course I have not factored in addition benefits to a permanent staff member such as paid cpd, sick and maternity pay, RSCV and VDS subs etc.

Cat - from the 2012 SPVS Salary survey a vet 9 years qualified gets a package with a mean value of £44,500 (range £38,250-£94,460).

There is a handy guide in an old In Practice (Nov/Dec 2008) by Peter Orpin who proposes a points based system for paying part time staff. If you are not a BVA member start a conversation and tell me your email address.

That gives you some solid hard numbers to use as a starting point for negotiations.

Thanks very much for the advice, it is really helpful!

I know my take-home pay will be less than £200 per day because of the other benefits & taxes, which is why I wanted to know a sensible figure with this in mind. However, thanks to Mark I now know to keep this to myself and let them make the first move!

I graduated in 2003 from Bristol Micheal, any info from SPVS would be great!

As an employee you would be entitled to holiday pay, sick pay , maternity pay so I wouldn't expect to pay locum rates. Do you know anyone in ur area that works part time, maybe ask them their rate. We have some part time vets who we pay by the hour.

I've no idea how much you should be asking for, but if you are going to be employed then your employers will have to fork out employment tax sorry Employer's NIC as well as your salary, and give you various other costly things, so they will expect, quite rightly, to pay you rather less than they would a self-employed locum.

Between £200 and £250 would be a normal daily rate 8.30am-7pm during the week for most locums unless they have a certificate/are doing specialist work. Saturday "morning" - depends on actual hours, but £100 - £150 would be reasonable. Based on your proposed working schedule - charge per fortnight would be £500 - £650?

I charge £240 for whole days, usually 830-7 and £120 for half days. I don't do quarter or a third or any other fractions.

It's much simpler and easier to charge that way, I did think about charging by the hour, but it's much simpler to use a daily rate.

I see they have asked you for a figure rather than suggest one. That way they can turn down your suggestion if it is higher than they were thinking and snap you up if it were lower. I would try to get them to stump up the first offer so the same powers lie with you. If 11k is your starting point. Keep that in mind but say you are not sure and what do they think the job is worth. Never be the first to propose a figure.

It looks like you would be working 11.5 hours a week, at £20 per hour, for 48 weeks per year, so that would come out at £11,000. That would be where I would start. Or, you are working about a quarter of full time hours so that could be another way of working it out. Have no idea how much full time vets get but guess it would be less than £44,000.... Not sure how tax makes any difference - it will still have to be paid if employed or self employed, only NI will be a bit higher if you are employed - 3% I think?
