Most pyo's would wait until the next morning. I have done them on weekend days but never at night. Give fluids and stabilise overnight. Unless I thought it had ruptured.

Ouch. When the price of lambs was high 3 years ago (maybe still is) we had a record of 5 farmers queued up in the surgery carpark on a Sunday afternoon waiting for caesars. They were completely unstressed by it and a couple went to the pub for a couple and came back in time to hold their ewes down. All survived (farmers, vet, lambs, trailers).

Interestingly, which did you do first out of the GDV and pyo? EBM would tell you that the pyo, as a relatively straightforward op, had the greatest chance of success and should therefore be done first, but also that the GDV is a time-pressured situation that requires intervention soonest...

A cat at 10.30pm whose symptoms sounded terminal when related by owners across the phone (anyone else find it slightly irritating when both Mr and Mrs try to tell you conflicting stories at the same time via their dual phone system?), that then turned out to be perfectly capable of seeing life through until reasonable o' clock....

According to recent advice on here, on receiving the caesar you should have gone to the pub and the pyo only needed a shot of alizin; the GDV should have had rads and serial scans, coupled with regular abdo taps and blood gas analysis until it was better (!)

That's a couple of pints, an injection and £3k of curative tests. A night to remember.
