I was under the impression they were all full to bursting point (and suspect the cat rescues genuinely are). This was not the experience of a couple of (fairly sensible) owners.

Are they full of easily homed Irish dogs? Presumably they take what comes to them from the UK but can select the 'best' Irish dogs.

I cannot be sympathetic towards rescue charities that are caring for the Irish stray problem whilst keeping UK dogs on a 'waiting list'. Another client (in difficulties) contacted us for help because he was told that the local rescues would only put his dog on a waiting list for re-homing!!

Something is not right somewhere!

I was told I wasn't suitable for re-homing a dog from a rescue centre, though this could have been I asked too many probing questions about the 4mo cross with obvious severe hind limb lameness, despite being a vet and having a husband who works from home. However I'm sure they would have no problem selling it (sorry giving a donation!!!!), to somebody out of work with lots of kids. They are way too many of these "charities" and yes I agree that is a posting all on its own! I don't understand why the bone fide charities seem to spend so much time and money moving animals all over the country, and yes I too was under the impression that all the rescue centres were full to bursting point.

Not wishing to comment on specific rehoming policies, which might need a massive thread of its own! but this story on the BBC would suggest that the RSPCA were stuffed to the rafters with dogs and cats at the moment: "RSPCA reports a 65 percent rise in abandoned pets" http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-20174712

Our localcentre once rehomed a GSD (expensive breed ) to someone who was "on the sick", had 5 brats,and already too many pets to be eligible to register another with PDSA When I remonsrtated with them they said they couldn't ask about people's financialcircumstances-probably politically incorrect to do so

A nurse at this practice was declined by the RSPCA for rehoming a small, old cross breed because she worked full time i.e. she would of actually been able to afford its likely mounting vet bills rather than being at home all day living on benefits !

Thanks It's just a suspicion I have that it may be the same one I referred to earlier Ex Welsh puppy farm is emotive-and I think it's a nice little earner The other rescues in the area-whoare overwhelmed by the local unwanted dog problem are not impressed

We do some work for the local council, and they seem to be sending their stray dogs to a rescue centre in Wales (from Essex) for rehoming. Surely everyone has enough of their own stray/homeless dogs to worry about without shipping them all over the country!

I can't say about how full the kennels are but I see a significant number from our local Dogs Trust , Honiley, that are from Ireland. To be honest it is the majority recently. I wondered if it was to give the public a choice apart from staffies and greyhounds ....( Don't misinterpret that, personally I like them both)

Every indication I have is that our local Dogs Trust, which is their HQ in Harefield and Battersea overspill kennels In Englefield Green, are bursting at the seams with local rescue dogs. Some of them may have originally come from Ireland or Romania but they were bought by punters first before being dumped on them, rescued or abandoned.

Addendum: I partially retract, since writing the above a client has just come in with a pup from the Dogs Trust which was ostensibly abandoned in Dublin, they still report the kennels rammed though.

The clear message from both clients is that the Dogs Trust had many empty kennels, Blue Cross similarly. Local RSPCA centre only had limited numbers of dogs available for inspection and the public are not admitted to the kennels. They go in, chose from a list (apparently short) and the dog is brought for inspection.

I was genuinely interested in hearing from others on the forum as I don't have any direct contact with any of the major centres. I was not trying to have a pop at any specific charity

I cannot see any justification in 'importing' stray dogs from Ireland (or other countries) until we have out own problems sorted. If there are lots of empty kennel spaces then it should be a good thing but I know of a number of local people on a 'waiting list' for their dogs to be taken by charities.

It all seems a bit odd!

For the second time in a couple of weeks a new owner has reported that the kennels at various rescue centres are nearly empty! That does not imply the empty kennels were at the Dogs Trust.

I feel you need to define 'rescue centres', I suspect they're talking about dodgy private enterprises, I don't think you'll find many spare kennels at Battersea and The Dogs Trust, 90% of them are full of Staffies, at least in our area.

We seem to be getting a few dogs being imported from Roumania into one local rescue - seems particularly wasteful in terms of money - surely better to try to kennel/rehome in country of origin where costs lower and not having to pay for 1000s miles of transport.

I know some rescues do try to reduce numbers in the run up to Christmas to cope with the unwanted presents/dumped pets in the new year.

No I know of a "rescue" that imports lorry loads of Irish puppies and "rehome" them for "donations" which equal puppy farm sale prices
