I have question to ask about career option. I have done by B.V.Sc. & A.H. ( Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry), M.V.Sc. (Animal Biochemistry), Now Pursuing my PhD studies in Animal Biochemistry. I have worked on vulture's

Re: Career related Query
Tim, am I right in thinking you work in the Middle East?
Yes Stephen you are quite correct, I am in the Arabian Gulf region although I am now 'non-practising'. I have worked also as a clinician in East Africa Somalia, Peru, Bangladesh and Qatar without being required to register or being listed on one. When doing so I have worked with clinicians with similar qualifications and experience of the initial poster. You are, of course, also correct about the requirements for clinical work in UK but I was trying to point out that clinical experience can be obtained in countries outside the UK that might well consider the OP's qualifications suitable.

Tim.

Re: Career related Query

Tim, am I right in thinking you work in the Middle East? Every country has their own registration requirements, varying from none to extremely onerous.

In the UK if you are practising veterinary surgery ie diagnosing and treating animals or performing acts of veterinary surgery, you need to to be MRCVS or on the Temporary Register . If your work is outside those fields eg industry or anything else where a veterinary degree might be useful but not essential, then registration would not be required.

Someone teaching anatomy or physiology or biochemistry or parasitology in a vet school would not need to be registered. Someone teaching subjects where clinical actions. decisions, diagnoses etc would need to be.

Re: Career related Query
If you are doing clinical work in any country, you need to be able to register with the governing body.
There are exceptions, which is why it is advisable to look around. Here, for example, there is no blanket registration. It seems to be required, and enforced, only for clinics (and veterinary pharmacies) offering a service to the public, and various degrees and qualifications are accepted. There are a number of clinicians privately employed by stables, organisations and farms where registration is not required; several with qualifications seemingly similar to those of the OP.

Other countries do not recognise this, and require that you sit their own exams to register to practice, eg USA.

If you are planning to do research work in a lab that does not involve clinical veterinary surgery then you may not need to be MRCVS, or you may be able to get a Temporary Registration allowing you to work in the field under the 'guidance' of someone who is MRCVS. it really depends what you do and whether or not your specialty is needed/ wanted. If someone wants you, they will get you in a position where you can work.

Re: Career related Query

The suggested requirement for MRCVS for clinical work and clinical teaching applies mainly to UK and is advantageous in some other countries. I am not sure how necessary it is for other European schools and countries, and not for many countries outside Europe. It is worth looking around and checking. I have worked with many clinicians who are not MRCVS. Is it a requirement in the Republic of Ireland, for example?

1. Post doc or lecturer job in biology related subject. For this you would not need MRCVS and I don't think it would be of any benefit. They will be looking at your research experience.

2. Or, if you want to work in a clinical setting in the vet school, apply for an internship, doing this you would be working as a vet and therefore would need MRCVS, but the main aim would be to improve your own skills, teaching jobs would only be given to people who were already well qualified clinically. There would be less research involved - more dealing with clinical cases in the university hospital.

So really it depends if you want to do clinical work or just research...

Re: Career related Query

@ Michael: I'm not native English Speaker so may be, I will improve it. Thanks for information and English Remark.

@ Neil: i.e encouraging one.

@Evelyn: Yes I will keep in mind teaching skills too. I have prepared for GRE some 4-5 years back. But did not give much attention to Grammar part. I will improve on it.

@ Alison: Is doing post-Doc in veterinary University have some edge in selection procedure in teaching cum research position. If I qualify MRCVS Exam will that have added points in selection procedure then?

Thank you all.

This site has many of the positions coming up in the UK (and some elsewhere): http://www.findapostdoc.com/

Some people do go direct into a lecturer position after phd but only if they are really good, or know someone, or possibly in some of the less good universities.

They are probably more interested in the number of publications you have in quality journals than anything else - there's certainly loads of foreigners in research so I don't think dodgy english puts them off too much.

If you wanted to be a clinician in a vet school I guess you might be best to apply for an internship, unless you already have a decent amount of clinical experience. You would need to be MRCVS for that.

Re: Career related Query

Just a note about nomenclature. In this country universities have Lecturers, Senior Lecturers, Readers and Professors, the Professor being the boss man.

In the U.S.A. everyone's a Professor unless they are so low down as to be Assistant Professor.

Remember you may want teaching skills as well as research skills. A veterinary school will hire a lecturer on academic abilities, but the students will judge you on your teaching.

Don't fret about your English - a few lessons and practice will soon smarten it up.

Re: Career related Query

Beter speeling than mine and I've doone OK
