We had a client take their guinea pig to the Cambridge rodentlogist recently. My collegue found a mass (small but firm, immobile and deep in the tissue just caudal to the ribs) and offered to remove it under GA. The owner, who is a bit G.pig bonkers, contacted Vedra, who said she would be able to remove it under just local anaesthetic! Luckily it transpired she couldn't find the mass when the pig went to her (!), so it was in today for the anaesthetic as planned.

Not mere pedantry, quite important. I would hope that they were disinterested.

I, for one, would not want my retention fee spent on the College LEADING a prosecution against these people. This is an animal welfare problem and almost certainly a matter for the RSPCA. However, they would need evidence enough to convince a court of law and that implies hard facts plus, almost certainly, a veterinary surgeon or two prepared to stand up and give evidence. I am in little doubt that the College will do all in its power to advise and support such a prosecution and add in its "two-pennorth" with respect to the veterinary surgeons act should the evidence support such action.

Does anyone know whether those individuals who are most upset by this have reported to RSPCA and offered their evidential and professional support?

Some 'excellent' advice by the rodentologists for the 'flu symptoms' seen in GPs at the moment:

There has been a large number of guinea pigs with flu-like symptoms throughout the country leading to some very poorly piggies.

The following advice if suggested for Flu (viral) symptoms:

- At the pre-clinical stage, the guinea pig's temperature will be raised.

- It is important to identify the signs early, so regular temperature checks should be undertaken

- Calpol should be given to the piggy at 8 hourly intervals for a period of three days.

- Rehydration fluids will be required (sub-cut preferable)

- A 'dab' of Vic vapor rub on the end of the nose will help to keep the airways clear.

If in doubt, contact your nearest Rodentologist for further advice/assistance

They don't even mention taking it to see a vet! Hadn't been on their site for quite some time...and wish I hadn't today - it hasn't done my mood any good at all!

I used to work at a practice that was very local to Vedra, she used to bring the odd animal in to us, and I think in the dim and distant past used to get medication from my boss. The rest of us weren't very happy about it.

I referred one to go for get fit swimming sessions and the operator deemed it appropriate for herself to call in a 'complementary' veterinary surgeon who kinda confirmed that the leg that she had not used for 6 weeks (owing to broken phalanges) was, yes indeed unbalanced, and moving in a slightly stiff fashion. but fortuntely it was not so serious that it warranted either accupunture, manipulation, or even herbs, just swimming, which was kinda the reason that I sent her. needless to say that she has not recived many from me lately.

I had a client the other day that phoned me up to say that "the chiropractor had asked her to let me know that he was treating her dog". This is a dog that had come to me with a vague discomfort around the pelvis area; I took xrays and told her I couldn't see an obvious orthopedic problem, gave her nsaid and when I followed up the case she had said that the dog was fine and back to norml.

It transpires that when she took the dog to an agility training course "the ladies there" suggested there was something wrong with the dog and advised her to go to the resident chiropractor, who manipulated the dog and told her that the dog's pelvis was "wrong" or something to that effect - I am not familiar with chiropractor terminology -. She said she was told no treatment was necessary, but she was asked to tell me about it.

Which makes it right I suppose.
