Points are merely an indication of activity (both the activity of the user and the activity they have triggered). A high point score really just indicates that the poster is an active member of the community.

Point scores do not indicate the quality if the activity, which you can only find out by browsing the site and seeing how many stars an individual has been awarded for their various contributions.

Yep, that's the issue. If you look at someone's points total, it might appear that they're unusually helpful and/or knowledgeable; but they're far more likely to be me instead.

My posts haven't really changed during the moratorium, and I don't need the extrinsic motivation to help adjust my moral compass. But if we're to have these indicators of public opinion, then it might be better to have simple like/dislike ratings, along with perhaps a 'thanks' button. And have that info under the avatar. After all, when was the last time you gave a post two stars? (Hmmm, that's a reasonable point, but not well articulated; and the punctuation left something to be desired. On balance, below average but not poor enough for a red star......)

Yes - the rating system comes in two parts - the stars where you gert an idea of the average opinion of your colleagues - and the points which may actually give the opposite opinion. If you have said something really annoying or controversial and get quoted plenty you can end up with loads of points - even though your are getting red starred! So a bit confusing there.

It would be helpful to know how many have rated the posts! At the moment the only way to do this is to rate your own post.

A single red star would not bother me but ten would make me think seriously about what I had said!

On balance I've voted for the stars, it doesn't bother me much if anyone likes or dislikes my posts but I have to say I sneakily missed votes of 5 star confidence and the challenge of being red-starred. I just wondered anyone ever gave anything other than 1 red or 5 gold stars, I know I haven't so maybe rather than us rating 1 to 5 why not have agree or disagree, hit or a miss, and the system would work out a rating and clearly it shouldn't be possible to rate one's own post, Also I guess it would take too much processing power but, although individuals should be able to anonymously occasionally if they wish, if someone is doing nothing but red star everything without making constructive posts then the system should be able to identify them and red-card them, and remove them if they persist.

I think you get one star for every 1,000,000 points... Oh wait, no more stars. Well, c'est la vie!
