Points are awarded for a whole range of activities on the site, for example, posting a new thread or blog post, replying to a thread, adding to the galleries etc. And you also get points when people reply to your thread (the idea being that if hundreds reply to your OP, you are clearly an interesting/fascinating/intelligent person who deserves thousands of points).

But also, if you award yourself stars, it alters the visible rating, but not the number of points (in other words, you can generally tell when someone has posted and then immediately given themselves five stars; I saw a couple over the weekend).

The stars you see are an average of those awarded, so if there are three yellow ones, it's likely one person's awarded one, and another, disagreeing, five. One star comes out red. The meaning is like any other of these things... from one (poor) to five (excellent); it's a way of commenting on the content of the post without actually posting a message.

The comments you keep seeing are there because this site appears to have somebody who randomly awards red stars for posts where it's clearly not appropriate for some odd reason... even allowing for differences of opinion, it happens too often and too idiotically to be just that. By the time you read the message, others might well have awarded lots of five stars to negate this weirdo. Most just ignore it, some find it mildly entertaining, and a few get upset by it, which may or may not be the point.

If you award stars yourself, you'll be able to see, by hovering your mouse over the ratings, how many people have rated the post. I'll award this one a red star, so you can experiment if you want to
