Thanks Gillian. You'll be glad to know it won't be ad infinitum - he expressed interest in the Three Peaks Cyclocross race and I was only trying to spare the rest of the forum from something which such a narrow appeal.

This is in the profile, so they may have selected none or friends only.

There isn't an option for a conversation with the anonymous account, as many users can post with this. Otherwise I don't know why this facility wouldn't be available. Odd.

Go to the profile of the person you wish to converse with.

And, er, click "Start conversation" on the right.

Look up the intended victim on find colleagues and there is a button for start conversation.
