Well whaddya know, I had crafted a response and toddled along to find that all comments have been removed without any explanation so the world will just have to manage without my pearls of wisdom this time around. Why am I not surprised - homeopaths are the ones who shout loudest about freedom of speech and "let's have the debate" yet when they hear anything they disagree with it's up skirts and away in a flurry of ad-hominem attacks; you can't see 'em for dust. They are all far too wrapped up in their own dogmas, prejudices and circular logic to be able to tolerate rational debate

For all their claims of compassion and caring I don't believe that homeopaths have any real conception of medical ethics. There really is too much evidence around that it's totally ineffective to be able to believe otherwise.

... why am I getting a sense of deja vu? Must be a glitch in the matrix

On a similar subject I've just been lent a book called the Canine thyroid epidemic by Jean Dodds. Take home message seems to be don't vaccinate or worm your dog regularly, feed raw foods, and if there is anything wrong with your dog, it is probably hypothyroidism, even if the tests appear normal.

Yes really shocking. And yes, more people speaking up against unproven alternative practices would be great. Most of our profession don't see it as a problem, I feel.
Well I for one think it is a problem. Addressing it with clients is not easy - no one likes to have their beliefs rubbished - you have to be delicate.

In the veterinary field I think it is arguably even more important that we speak out. The patients are relying on their owners and on the vets to provide their care - they don't get a say in the decision making. Not only are the owners lay people and often unable to distinguish between medicine and hocus pocus but they are also frequently poor judges as to whether the animal is suffering or sick and even whether it is improving or not. All of us have had clients bring in non weight bearing animals and say " I don't think he's in pain - he's not crying." or an animal with horrific dental disease "He can't be in pain - he's still eating." or confidently assert the animal is much improved when it hasn't eaten in days, is severely dehydrated and lost massive amounts of weight.

To my mind if we go along with clients who are using unproven alternative medicnes we are given those treatments tacit legitimacy. The argument that it does no harm is not correct - given that owners aren't great judges of how their animals are doing some will choose to use alternative options instead of effective treatments as they believe they are helping and this can lead to suffering and neglect.

Re: What doctors don't tell you

The debate about what doctors dont tell you has turned a bit veterinary:

I've just been reading a related thread on a (non medical) forum on the danger of quackery. Of course this is at the extreme end of the scale - few homeopaths would advocate abandoning all conventional therapy to treat a condition such as colorectal cancer, but it shows how vulnerable people in desperate situations can become. Sadly the lady in question was not just let down by her homeopath.

I should warn you that both links, especially the coroners report, make for grim reading.

The Coroner's Report: http://www.ratbags.com/rsoles/history/2012/0407dingle_coroner.pdf
Letter from the patient to the homoeopath sent before her death: http://www.ratbags.com/rsoles/history/2012/0407dingle_letters.htm

By way of light relief http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtYkyB35zkk
Just read that in full. Christ the poor woman.

From a veterinary perspective, and with reference to the failures of the two doctors Barnes and Tabrizian this sentence struck me: "

any apparent legitimisation of these regimes could provide mixed messages for vulnerable and often desperate cancer suffers. "

As vets I think we have a duty to speak up against homeopathy and similar unproven alternative practices to prevent this situation arising in our patients.
Poor woman my ar*e, anybody that daft should be up for a Darwin Award, sorry.
Gerry yes she has to share in the blame. At the end of the day though she was a lay person who was needy and vulnerable. She chose to put her trust in people who portrayed themselves as able to help her. Her own husband was complicit in this and two doctors failed to strongly advise her against what she was doing. They too were complicit in the situation - one DID advise surgery but only once and not strongly and then gave her an unproven treatment which he claimed would help. To my mind - and in the mind of the coroner - this also influenced her to stick with the alternative approach and ignore the surgeon's advice.

Sadly lay people are not qualified to make judgements about their treatments - they make their calls based on the info they are given and they are not always able to judge the quality of that information. In a situation where you have national bodies recognising homeopathic and other treatments (and vets and doctors practicing homeopathy) many people think these are legitimate options. I know a number of people who are intelligent and knowledgable in their own fields and yet believe in some of the more legitimate sounding alternative options.
