If he, and others, really would stand back and watch a ferret get ripped to pieces in his kitchen just because it got into the wrong house - well - I would question the love of animals which presumably was part of the reason for becoming a vet.

There is a big difference in allowing animals to express normal behaviour, and not choosing to help an animal in distress.

Is there not a difference between a cat and its prey in their nautral environments, where the cat kills an animal after hunting it, and the animal has a fair chance to get away (in its own surroundings, other birds/animals alarm calling if they see the cat, the animal knows where it is and how to escape) vs. a ferret trapped inside a house/building, in strange surroundings, unable to find a way out and being killed by a dog? I'd have thought the component of human presence implies our involvement and acceptance of what is an unfair deal for the wild animal. Kinda the reason why hunting foxes with dogs is outlawed, why feeding live rodents to snakes and so on is not allowed. My view on it anyways and firmly in line with Wynne's..wonder what others think

Sounds like the time a cat managed to get into a prep room cupboard and pushed it's way through the back into the void behind. We had to dismantle the whole unit to get it out. That put Ian into a really good mood that day.....

Why? It's what terriers do. Mine is a great little ratter/rabbitter and pulls a stoat/weasel out of the dry stone walls couple of times a year. With the chickens and vegetables she is an asset.

My money would be on the Patterdale.

(Have you seen the mess a stray ferret can make in a pheasant pen?)

On the plus side you might be able to legitimately claim something on your household insurance for the damp issues and the damage it has cause thus needing you to renovate the kitchen?? Worth a read of the small print anyway.

that reminds me of the gerbil escaping at work, it went behind the kitchen units and the hunt in front of the distressed owner lasted forever .....

Good on you, tackle the kitchen and the damp before winter comes and you'll enjoy it at the right time of year!

There you are, you see, there's a blessing in everything.

Now you can get the damp fixed (might not be rising, might be condensation – is there a fridge venting there?) and you can make a start on your new kitchen. This is how everything gets done, in my house.

I thought of phoning the RSPCA, so they could tell me to phone the nearest vet

Still smells of ferret, and I've discovered there's rising damp, and the kitchen cabinets are so knackered they won't fit back together again
