I have today received confirmation of a case of systemic lupoid onychodystrophy in a 5y 7m FN collie x, made by p3 onychectomy of dew claw. Wound healing well, all other claws were clipped back and cauterised, whilst

Re: Niacillin/Doxycycline/Pred/EFA doses!!!

I do a lot of Greyhound work and we see SLO very frequently in this practice. We trim back and remove loose nails after a hibi soak under GA, put on some abs and opioid analgesia in the short term; we avoid the pred due to excessive side effects in this breed. The mainstay of our treatment is Onychotin (Biotin) 1 daily (a pot of 100 approx £15 to the client) ongoing, and Trental (pentoxifylline) 10-15mg/kg BID (fairly expensive) for many months.

Re: Niacillin/Doxycycline/Pred/EFA doses!!!

Just a follow up! it's 8 weeks since the OP, and the dog is doing BRILLIANTLY! Minimally pu/pd on 20mg pred BID for first 6 weeks now cutting down fortnightly to current dose of 10mg BID, Oxytet stopped, EFA, VitE and Niacinamide continuing and her nails are looking solid, nail beds normal and no lameness.

One thing I have noticed is her eyes look rather bulgy though (O has noticed this too) and I'm wondering if there is a cause for this? I dont have a tonometer but retropulsion is well tolerated and there is no sign of any other ocular pathology. My first assessment (ok..guess..) was steroid induced muscle atrophy of the temporal and masseter muscles which might make her eyelids retract a little?? Anyone any thoughts on this?

This aside however, the patient is doing great. So thank you for all you treatment suggestions.

V much appreciated. Re. the Niacillin - I was wondering why I couldnt find it anywhere. Am sure that's what the clever lady at Idexx suggested but then the reception on my phone was a little dodgy at the time. Many thanks- am very grateful!

I have used high dose EFAs as outlined above along with biotin (Onychotin) with good success.
You can use Go-omega which is high dose EFAs, or Yumove plus which is also supposedly high dose(though I haven't looked into it much at all)

Alternatively Cardisure by boehringer has fairly high doses of Omega 3s again not sure of quantities

If O doesn't mind a (very) fishy smell Go omega is quite good. Alternatively a high quality (eg seven seas)OTC supplement may be an alternative.

By Niacillin I think you might mean Niacinamide (Nicotinamide) - dose for that in the bsava formulary is 250mg tid for dogs up to 25kg.
