Apart from the vet bashing I didn't think it was too bad. That was until about 5:06 mins in where the poor dog's loose incisors are scaled with an ultrasonic scaler

Re: YouTube conscious doggy dental video

How many dogs would actually let you do this without a GA (leaving aside that fact that you shouldn't be trying in the first place!) I would say with at least half the dogs I see for routine vaccinations, just trying to look at their teeth can be a struggle!

Re: YouTube conscious doggy dental video

There has been a ruling in California where conscious dentals seem to be big buisness, to disallow it. There has been uproar against the Veterinary board. I think it is only right that we do not allow non trained and unqualified persons to perform dental treatments on pets without proper veterinary care and as everyione mentioned, analgesia!!

Surely this brings her technique into question. She probably didn't show the extraction because of the inevitable blood and pain. She said herself wobbly teeth need a vet and a GA.

It's a shame the public will believe what they want to believe and that is that vets do things a certain way to make more money and not that GAs are best for dental procedures to be done properly and humanely. What really angers me is when a client quickly dismisses a dental and GA in an older dog because of the perceived risk, even if the halitosis is so bad that they can't bear the dog panting and the tartar buildup is so severe you can't see the teeth anymore. I want to ask them how they think their dog feels. Probably like it's got flu all the time. Anyway, rant over, thanks for your input Evelyn.

Re: YouTube conscious doggy dental video

Evelyn,

The first twenty seconds made me think that here is a typical anti-vet nutter and I almost stopped watching. I'm glad I did not.

However. Some of her adverse comments may well be justified. When she said that some practitioners don't understand dentistry but see it as a great profit stream (I paraphrase) I'm not sure if she was referring to vets, (as she also speaks of "practitioners" clearly meaning unqualified people such as the one in the vid) but it would be fair comment.

Such acts by non-vets are illegal in the UK - I have no idea about the US - under the Veterinary Surgeons Act. Straightforward cosmetic scaling (such as the groomer might do) is legal; but such straight supragingival scaling does absolutely nothing for the health of the dog.

The commentary does clearly point out that the dog should see a veterinarian if there is any redness, inflammation, etc., etc., and the woman does at least understand that subgingival scaling is important although she does it very badly.

It is, I maintain, quite impossible to properly examine the mouth and to probe the periodontal space in a conscious dog. Dogs can be persuaded to accept subgingival scaling of the buccal surfaces by hand instruments. But that is neither here nor there. How can you scale subgingivally, probe, root-plane, or indeed do anything at all on the lingual and palatal surfaces in a conscious dog? You can't.

Although the woman is clearly relatively educated about what she does, she doesn't know enough. Note that with neither the hand instruments nor the ultrasonic scaler, nor the polisher, does she go anywhere near the lingual or palatal surfaces. She is holding the ultrasonic scaler the wrong way round! Never apply the edge or the tip of it like that to the tooth!

These particular dogs seem to have been trained to, er, accept the ultrasonic scaler but it's ghastly to think of it being applied to the teeth, especially subgingivally, of a conscious dog. Even I want to wince a bit when my kind competent dentist is doing my little recessed bits.

Then, applying the thing to that mobile tooth is just horrible. You can even see in the vid that the dog is being hurt. Then, she tells us, she pulled it out with her fingers, although we don't get shown that.

The whole thing just emphasises that dentistry, even if it's routine, has to be done properly and that means general anaesthesia.

I can't help wondering if a lot of the anti-GA campaign is really motivated not so much by the supposed risks of anaesthesia but by veterinarians charging huge wodges of dollars for anaesthesia.

Re: YouTube conscious doggy dental video

So when do they scale the lingual aspect?
