I think if it were just a lack of opposition, the electorate wouldn't have turned out in the record numbers that they did.

Still, I fear you might be right about the next election in this country. 'Call me Dave' seems polished, but not exactly inspirational. I wonder whether 'Boy George' will even last that long. Anyone care to offer me some odds!

I don't wish to be a party pooper, but didn't Obama's success have something to do with the lack of a credible opposition?

The same mechanism might even allow the Labour party to stay in power at the next General Election. Heaven help us all.

Bravo to President Elect Obama,

i was thrilled to hear his victory speech which was full of hope not only to the Americans but to the whole world at large and in particular Africa.

unlike President Bush i do hope Obama will not support the currupt and dictatorial regimes in Africa who openly abuse human rights and loot the nations wealth only to bank the money in western banks where it cannot be traced. imagine a President in one of the E.African country accumulating wealth to the tune of $1.7 billions within 22 years since he has been in power. he is untouchable because he had the support of Bush and indeed Gordon Brown.

hopefully due to global financial crisis all western banks will intoduce transparence and stop the poor countries being looted and money being deposited in accounts which are top secret where even money laundering by these dictators has been the norm.

And a reassuring lack of cheesy grins and fake expansive hand gestures to boot. I don't envy him the expectations piled on his shoulders though, who could live up to that? I heard about a newspaper cartoon which depicted the Whitehouse gardner putting up a sign next to a lake which read, "please don't walk on the water"!

I wish him all the luck - unyielding hope indeed.

Please don't get me wrong, the whole new labour thing was a disaster but I feel TB should have been called to account for his mistakes rather like those greedy people in the financial world who got the world economy into such a financial mess and appear to have walked away unscathed.

'Hope he's not another TB' were exactly my thoughts too. But I'm optimistic.

Actually, I think his election is in itself inspirational, on many different levels, almost regardless of what he does next.

But I can't agree with you that Brown has been left to clear up TB's mess. Wasn't Brown equally to blame for making the mess in the first place?

well let's hope he is not another tony blair who basically looked good on TV but did very little for the country apart from getting us involved in 2 wars and then walked away into a multimillion income leaving gordon brown to try and clear up the mess. I hope he is another bobby kennedy who will inspire a nation - we could do with one here as well!!
