I usually have no less than 3! Coffee is my lifeblood...No seriously, my maths is usually better than that coffee or no coffee!

I think your maths must work differently to mine as I get it to 5mg ie 1/5 or 0.2 of 25.
I had considered suggesting a 5mg pred on a gun day, but I have no idea if that is just complete rubbish or a well reasoned precaution.
Gun dogs work bloody hard. I think that is a very wise precaution.
I agree- but maybe worth trying to work out what the physiological dose for the dog would be - the figure I remember is 0.2mg/kg/prednisolone per day, which for a 25 kg dog works out as 1 mg pred.

As it happened it was booked in for castration for behavioural reasons recommended by Roger Mugford and as I was considering giving it cortico-steroids pre surgery it developed what is probably a food allergy so is on steroids for that and being tapered off while we do a food trial. Otherwise I would probably just put them on a saline drip under GA as a precaution unless I knew the surgery would be particularly stressful.

Re: Addisons disease

I had considered suggesting a 5mg pred on a gun day, but I have no idea if that is just complete rubbish or a well reasoned precaution.

Re: Addisons disease

I've seen Addisons in all shapes and sizes. As you say shouldn't be a particular problem but if it is gluco-corticoid as well as mineralo-corticoid deficient then the stress of extreme exercise could theoretically be an issue so I would warn them not to over-do it. There was an issue discussed in the veterinary journals a while ago about 'gun-dog collapse syndrome' which I believe was over-exercise induced hypoglycaemia (cf 'hitting the wall' in a marathon) and a common sense approach to feeding and exercise should take care of that. Don't know just a thought.
