Saw my first Basking Sharks. Here's a movie of one of the bigger ones. My mate is taking the movie, I'm on the kayak to his right.

However, the best experience was feeding Manatees at a state park in Florida. These were all rescued animals, mainly from propellor strikes and through a friend of a friend we got into the park at first light to feed these gentle giants. They were so gentle, even with my pregnant wife and it was one of the most incredible hours I have ever spent.

Not quite as big as the other two, but definately has the cute factor. The neonate still had the folds down it's side from being in the womb, so was less than 48hours old when we saw it.

Took this off the side of a catamaran in Tenerife, not quite as adventurous as sea kayaking, but the weather was probably a bit more on the favourable side :)

Re: Life outside work - Close encounter with a Shark

I'll see you a shark, and raise you a whale!

(this was my first whale, seen from aboard a friend's boat en-route to Crete a few years ago. Photo doesn't really do it any justice ... a magnificent sight).

Seakayaking in Skye must be stunning - but I think a bit cold for me :)
