Just to set the facts straight 8 members voted to send the matter back for further consideration by the PR&C and 13 against (and hence to approve the recommended fee) - so nowhere near 30 'allowed it through'.

Many thanks to those who voted for common sense and my abject apologies for tarring anyone unfairly with the wrong brush! i am delighted to be wrong but I would still happily run the data base for a heck of a lot less than these figures stated!

I voted for you so clearly my choices were sound!

There was some good news on the RVPP the fee will be reduced to £34 / year from 2013. As good as that news might be it brought Mr Elliot to his feet - he has adopted the RVPP fee as his personal mission in life and is very much like a terrier with a bone when it comes to delving into the true costs of the scheme. In a whirlwind of data he pointed out that 1.7 staff equivalents look after a Register that has only 220 new entries per year and 36 deletions – that is about one entry per day. He wondered which of the 1.7 staff made the daily change to the Register. From the total cost of £122 K and after deducting the overheads he had estimated that the staff involved are paid £55 K per annum when the average vet is paid £35K. The head of department replied that the costs covered meetings with the VMD and staff costs were total costs inclusive of NI etc one had to be careful not to compare apples and pears. She pointed out that there was more to the maintenance of the Register (such as a monthly report to the VMD) than simply the new entries. A motion proposed by Mark Elliot and seconded by Bob Partridge to refer the matter back to P&RC failed to pass 8 FOR with 13 AGAINST.

Wish Jeremy Paxman could interview The head of department......

So much for my protestations of earnest reporting...

Apologies for the innaccurate figure quoted by myself - I did have 30 down in my notes, obviously misheard while scribbling (my only defence being it's somewhat diffiuclt to hear the president read out for/againsts from the back of the council chamber with a building demolition going on).

Mortified about that. Correction to go in VT ASAP.

Bob - no offence taken, I was messing. VT is often still refered to as "the comic", as we all know....But we really don't go out of our way to make stuff silly or sensationalist (rarely need to do it ourselves ;) ahem...I am, of course, joking...) - we do, however, try and keep up with as much as we can. But thank you for the compliments :D

Tony - good point - apathy is a real chicken and egg issue for the profession and the college...Sad as well...Guess just like with national political apathy, people are dispondent with the status quo (or just not 'bovered'!), but don't have the oomph to throw in their vote and possibly enact change...

Gossip as in fun, informative not in a negative way!

Vet Times is easy reading and less stuffy than other publications!

I was pretty amazed about the size of the amount set aside for a simple database with minimal invoicing. Bob and Marks complaints need airing and it worries me that with the new elected councilors they seem to be the lone voices.

Bob - gossip, gossip?!! *grumble* ;) As stated, I asked for the figures but was told they couldn't be published yet - I think they still have to go through committees before finally being stamped and sealed. THEN we'll get to see them. Makes it a bit awkward writing about figures the regulator won't let you see, but I thought Bob and Mark's complaints worth an airing...No doubt more to follow...

I would be very interested to hear the other councillors' analysis of the figures to justify their voting. For the work that is described, even Mr Elliott's suggested £24 per practice seems a lot. With all that sending of copies to VMD, liaising with practices, VMD discussions, processing financial transactions, perhaps they need a new computer system to speed things up?
