Warn the owner that there is a theoretical risk that they may interfere with each other in which case it may be logical to go for a non-standard site.

When we have chip failures I routinely put the new chips in the normal place and have yet to have an issue! You will know within a few seconds of chipping if there is a problem!

Rabies vaccinate from scratch if going abroad! The dog is already in the UK and if it had been infected with rabies symptoms should have appeared by now!

DEFRA seem to have gone from extremely strict to very laid back about the whole PETS scheme if the comments above are typical responses.

Re: Failed chip

[quote user="Alan Tevendale"]

Saw a vet in Morocco then Spain and got passport (only 8-10 weeks old I think) then got diagnosed with Rabies in Norway at a later date. You wouldn't want to be the person found to miss inaccuracies in an imported animal when there are suspicions of the traceability and therefore validity of the importation of the animal in such situations.

The US chips we have had problems with only show up as AVID chip without a number unless a suitable scanner is provided by the owner.

It may be possible for the owner to buy a scanner from abroad which will allow traceability unless the chip has failed.
