I loathe the abbreviation "K9", hate the term "wellness", and wish people would spell "inflamed" correctly; but I'm perfectly happy to abbreviate "consultations" to "consults" in general conversation. I am nothing if not inconsistent :0))

For silly names spare a thought for cyclists when they order products made by the French firm Mavic. They have Ksyrium wheels, Yksion tyres and Zxellium shoes, Aksium rims are the easy ones.

And Pasteurella, Corynebacterium, Pitryosporum, Ostertagia ( and Ostergiasis changing to ......iosis! ) etc etc. Why are all these new names either very awkward to spell or completely unpronounceable? Why are they never published except on lab reports. Why change them at all? Is it just to confuse us more experienced Vets and make us feel out of touch ( until you work out the old name that is). .........................or is it just us getting on a bit ! Hmmmmm! The best silly name I have heard of recently was if you cross a bull terrier with a shih tzu and you get B--------T.................think about it !

And another thing while it is in my mind. When did surgical operations or procedures become " surgeries". I still call a surgery either the building or a consultation session eg evening surgery etc. I believe it stems from the use of American textbooks but it still sounds daft to me. Very true; I returned to UK from several years overseas to hear my colleagues talking about a mysterious Campylobacter. Turned out to be one I had always known as Vibrio; and I have lost track of the changes to Fusiformis.

How on earth can the name Zoetis capture any focus? What has it got to do with partnership? Human well-being? Seems like a stupid, confusing and daft name to me. It may get us talking about the company but I suspect will add nothing to their profits.

Still the name is bound to change in the next few years anyway!

'Zo-ettis' seems easier to say than 'Per-fizer' without spitting. i assume there is a 'zoo' root, and the rest of the name came out of countless focus sessions

Personally, i wish they wouldn't change names but drug companies have formed an incestuously complex circle of take overs, mergers and so on, often involving name changes, that I think in reality there is probably only one mega company!

JIF! Never could understand the reason for the change and out here both product names (JIF and CIF) can be seen, often side by side, on apparently identical products.

You just have to wander through a Frynch supermarket looking at cleaning products to see peculiar names - can remember the outcry when a popular creme cleaner was renamed 'Cif'' - but I have totally forgotten what it was called before.

as a teenager a contraction of a word relating to an STD that sounds exactly the same reduced me to helpless giggles and even now.....I think that was one of the silliest names for a product ever but now everyone seems used to it

One poor rep (many years ago ) had his company's name changed to Pitman Moore-so got a lot of stick about selling typewriters Then there was another company takeover-so he found himself working for Fort Dodge-result was jokes about dodgy cowboys-the poor man was stillin the same job

Some of these names derive from non-Anglo languages. What seems odd to us can seem perfectly normal to someone else. It's a big world!
