This is a trickle-down from international competition as the FEI have banned it and our national federations tend to adopt the same rules

Re: Pergolide banned for affiliated competition
Wynne, I agree 100%. I meant more in general, if a horse has had a course of any medication then there should be a 'withhold from competition' time on the bottle that is there for all to see. I know there is a list somewhere but I never can find it when I want it!
The first problem is that the rel;evant testing hasn't been done as you don't have the finincial implications of eg. a whole bulk tank having to be thrown away so the withdrawal times are only suggestions. The second problem is that some drugs are allowed with a suitable withdrawal period (eg. phenylbutazone) and some are prohibited entirely ie. should never be given at all (eg. isoxuprine).

Re: Pergolide banned for affiliated competition

Thanks for the clarification

Bute was completely different-it could disguise arthritis sufficiently for a horse to be sound at trot-but to have action impaired at a gallop-when short striding might lead to XC falls

I think this is a potential welfare problem

I do think we need the bottles of these 'banned' medicines having a withdrawal before competition, much like a cattle or sheep withdrawal period. It should be printed on the bottle.

Re: Pergolide banned for affiliated competition

I agree, does seem very unfair and even more worrying if BRC follow this lead and other non affiliated competitions. Mum's beloved old pony banned from lead rtein class in local show ? Don't laugh Once the trickle-down effect starts-who knows where it will finish Bute enabled a horse to compete when it might be to it's detriment Pergolide helps prevent one of the most agonisingly painfuldiseases known There's no clinical comparison-but some owners will take horses off pergolide-and cause then unimaginable agony

I appreciate that many of the same arguments were used when 'bute was banned but surely normalising a horse's steroid production and giving it painkillers to enable it to compete are a completely different thing? You could almost argue that un-medicated Cushings sufferers should be banned as they have unnaturally high cortisol levels...
