A minor point, though - sometimes the vet goes to a foreign school because he/she simply can't afford the huge tuition fees or the loans. You know what they call £9000 a year in the USA? A bargain. So the "didn't get into vet school" comment wasn't completely fair, I feel.
Sorry, but I think point 20, is a good one. Certainly in the UK.
No need to apologize - we'll have to disagree on this one, as quite a few of my classmates are doing just fine here. ;)
No doubt they are. But the comment was that if your vet went to VS in the Caribbean they probably weren't good enough to get into a (UK) vet school - I would say that is likely to be the case!
Well done, John! Spoken like one with clear experience of the US vet school system - with their 28 (29 if you count Utah) vet schools for 50 states, and their better than 20-to-1 oversubscription for places. Adding the the pertinent fact that many UK citizens are getting their training in the EU because the UK vet schools are equally oversubscribed, would you recognize an EU graduate if you saw one?

edit: by the way, St George is accredited by the AVMA, so that Caribbean school is rated at the same level as the other USA vet schools. In addition, other non-accredited school graduates have to pass the NAVLE exam, with a pass requirement of 80%. With a very few exceptions, most UK vet school graduates have topass this test too. So even if you went to an overseas school, you still need a VERY high standard to practice in the USA.

Re: Readers Digest likes us (Well the American version)

I think the sentiment behind the statement - significantly contributed by someone anonymously! - that a vet who went to one of the Caribbean schools is not as good as a US grad is totally off the mark. I say this as someone who had the pleasure of working alongside quite a few soon-to-be Caribbean grads (as they all do their final clinical year at a US school).

However, lots of US students do go to these schools because for whatever reason they have not been successful in gaining admission to a US school. And they are REALLY expensive (although the US schools are doing their best to catch up)! Most grads from the Caribbean schools will have near or over $200-250K in loans (compared with an 'average' of 'only' $140-150K for most US grads).

Re: Readers Digest likes us (Well the American version)
