True, and he/she left the same impression on me (it was just the James in the pseudonym that made me think of a man, no idea who she/he is). But he/she mentioned a nasty experience in the past, so I find the move more understandable after the explanation. By the way, not related to the vets in question: In my book locums have to be good vets as well as good communicators. One bad communicator standing in for me for the summer hols has cost me more money than you'd ever think. A decent vet, but horrible with people :-( (speaking of nasty experiences...)

Yes, you do. Me, I don't. The main difference is that I don't have the skills to fall back on if I upset people - so it makes no difference whether you think I'm real or not. Not having others take my contributions seriously is hardly a new thing for me, to be honest.

Personally - my thoughts are that in a professionals forum, I'd like to know that all the people I'm discussing cases or treatment options or interpretations with are all veterinarians. Granted there are some registration checks, but if the name is there, it's pretty easy to know they are registered or not. Pseudonyms are not.

Also, and I've said this before, I stand by what I say on here and feel no need to hide behind a false name. I'm happy to discuss differing opinions and know that I won't always agree with everyone else.

I don't really understand the need for a false name on these forums I guess.

Is the withholding of information a deceit? It's not like fluffygirl is trying to persuade us that that is her real name? There are plenty of reasons why professional people might want to withhold information about themselves, for example, home address, credit card details, personal medical history.

As is very well known, Mr Malcolm Ness MRCVS is married to Miss Judith Joyce MRCVS- I suspect for nearly 30 years. Sometimes Miss Joyce chooses to use her married name, sometimes not. Sometimes Mr Ness uses his wife's email account, sometimes not. There is no pseudonym, nothing contrived, just convenience of access to account for why Mr Ness is sometimes female and someone else.

The posts are generally signed by the poster if they are using each others accounts so no deceit there!

I am not fussed how people are known on the forum. I quickly work out if they are on my wavelength or not. In time they either get my respect or don't depending on how they post rather than whether I agree with them or not.

I only post with variations of my name (by choice) and am more than happy to be educated, corrected or politely admonished as appropriate!

Thank you for jumping to my defence. However, I believe that Mr Rimmer was referring back to my admission that I can be an a*se.

Mr Rimmer seems to have taken a dislike to me but it is not something about which I have lost a great deal of sleep. Arlo, on the other hand, seems in danger of developing a repetitive strain injury in his yellow card arm. Who could ever have predicted that Jonathan Wray and Malcolm Ness would appear in any discussion on the side of cool, calm, sensible reason?

When it comes to heated debate,I prefer James Herriot Lied who appears a much more capable and worthy sparring partner - I just wish I knew who she was. Is she, in fact, Mrs Hammett of Worcestershire?

I use a pseudonym because, in a previous incarnation in which I used my real name, somebody with whom I'd had a pretty minor spat saw to it that a locum contract was reneged upon and I was greatly out of pocket. Interestingly, that person used a pseudonym - which proves a point, I guess - so I decided if you can't beat 'em........

If anybody wishes to PM me for my real name, no issues at all. I'm actually quite nice in real life .
