You know... the idea of drought on this sponge of an island always makes me laugh. And you should hear Southern Europeans on the subject. 'Drought' in the UK is simply bad management.

The British population has increased by 25% in the last 50 years Currently we have a net immigration of 250,000 per year (500,000 in 250,000 out ) This isn't sustainable on an island this size Take something as basic as water-if we have another drought like 1976-the country might well run out. Another very non-PC point is most of the emigrants are highly qualified-and are moving to escape ruinously high taxes-most of the immigrants are unskilled, and giving our layabouts an excuse to live off the state

My main anxiety about the numbers of recent european immigrants is that there are just not enough jobs - in our profession or any other field. It gives and excuse to our feckless youth to say that they can't get jobs and also (since many don't have the massive loans) they can work far cheaper than our graduates.

The Anglo Saxons were destructive of your culture and your language; they pushed you (the Welsh, i.e. the native Q celtic british) to the fringes of wales, cornwall, northumbria, parts of lowland scotland, brittany and northern spain. All in all not the most pleasant experience.

That'd be a melting pot which, within living memory, practiced a peerless expansionism and diffusion of gene pool. We're the product of our actions alright: the mass immigrations of, for example, Caribbean and Indian sub-continent workers - largely supremely skilled and a positive influence on pretty much any social or market index you might care to quote - were directly informed by colonialism and our desperate need. Lately, the influx of Eastern European workers has been about consent and political give and take in negotiating a net gain from the EU (those who moan about the influence of the common market on our lifestyles need to understand how the rest of Europe sees our blocking agendas). Those who decry multiculturalism as a modern phenomenon often miss - and this is certainly not an accusation of racism against you, Gerry - the under-radar mixing of northern European cultures which has gone on for centuries. A quick flick through the phone book would confirm this.

Melting pot? You betcha. Bring it on.

Welsh, by the way - with Irish, Scottish and Cornish influences. Bollox to the saesneg.

A rather specious point, you might as well say we're all descended from Adam. For a thousand years after the Norman invasion the population of the british isles settled, intermarried and blended into the four constituent races that formed our nation; the Irish were predominantly celtic with some norse thrown in, the Scots ditto, the English Anglo Saxon with norse and the Welsh, for the most part, being the last of the old, brythonic Britons. There was virtually no significant immigration in that time; some Hugenots, some Flems, but in such insignificant numbers as to make no real cultural or racial impact, that didn't happen until the late 19th century with the arrival of Russian/eastern European Jews. I don't think it's fair to be more miffed at one owner than another in that situation; at least the Eastern European woman is acting responsibly by having her cat spayed in the first place. She might have come to the UK with the attitude of finding work and contributing to society but is unable to find a job right now - unless you asked her outright, how do you know this isn't the case? I don't think anyone has the absolute right to judge/compare someone on the basis of their background or employment status. Bear in mind, everyone currently in the UK is either an immigrant or a descendant of one (dating back to 10,500BC for the earliest emigrants).

There was a survey a few years ago in the US about how people would spend the healthcare budget, and gold teeth came top. This silly little Englander mentality about 'my taxes' and 'them taking xyz' is suprising for an assumed non-Sun reader with intellgence - and completely ignorant of the vast things and the superb quality of life you, Mr Atkinson, enjoy through paying taxes, far and above what you could do with the money yourself, mainly because you'd likely spend it on the wrong things. What, pray, do you take from the system that's been funded by thise paying more taxes?

I am an East Anglian, Welsh, Scottish and French cross with a branch of red haired family in Ireland that we don't talk about because it involved the 'violation' of a maid in the eighteenth century which hasn't been forgotten!

That makes me and most so called 'native' residents of the UK a complete mongrel. I am proud of this and look forward to future generations incorporating genetic elements from all over the world. This should give hybrid vigour to the Russell name.

I reserve the term white Anglo-Saxon man to those lovable specimens who appear on TV dressed in jeans and a Union Flag covering a bare,beer belly chanting here we go, here we go! Everyone else is British (unless they are not of course!).
