Yes, I wonder why this is so; is it a matter of Data Protection? All the information must be on a server somewhere and as it has previously been readily available (at least to MsRCVS) why can it not still be? My interest is simply that, being rather isolated, I use the information to keep track of and contact old friends, former colleagues and veterinarians whom I wish to consult. In theory I could enquire of RCVS each time but being able to consult the Register on-line would be much quicker and probably less irritating for both parties.

Full addresses have always been available in the register, so if you've always used your home address then it's always been available to anyone who checks the hard copy of the register in their local reference library. The register on the website gives just the county.

It just seems a bit disorganised and rather unprofessional.

Also, if you send your payment by post, be sure to get a proof of postage certificate!

I imagine that if the government were ever to decide to take away our right to self regulate, not something I would ever want to happen, it would be very unpopular to pay for it out of general taxation and they would find a way to charge us, for example Ofgem is paid for by the energy companies.

That's what much of Belgravia House keeps telling you. It is not quite true. RCVS , which had already existed for some 85 years before the Veterinary Surgeons Act, has been given the statutory duty of regulating veterinary surgeons. That doesn't remove its right to take a role in promoting and defending the veterinary profession. It is supposed to serve both public and profession. We are all members of the RCVS. That's what being self-governing means. Something that parts of Belgravia House need to be reminded about.

You're all so naive, they all want your personal details solely to sell them to a third party for marketing purposes aka junk mail. Pay by Direct Debit, job sorted, don't have to remember to pay, no charge if you're on an electronic banking tariff.. Anyone who gives the RCVS anything other than their practice address is nuts unless you're retired then it hardly matters if someone turns up at the house door with their dog does it ! Does it?

The RCVS is our regulator, it exists to serve the public not the profession. We have the privilege of being self regulating, but we have to remember that it is a privilege and not a right. Whether we think the RCVS does a good job or not is another matter.

The Wireless Telegraphy Act 1967 obliges retailers to notify TV Licensing of any sales or rentals of television sets, so they therefore need to know your name and address. Not sure that giving a false one is illegal however?

Actually now you mention it, I do remember someone insisting on my name and address for something once, and they had no need for it. So I said my name was Mr May Dupp and I lived on 1 May Dupp Lane, Mayduppsville, etc. Very childish, but I made my point, and the girl reluctantly typed the rubbish I was saying.
