The comments apparently made were associated with the difference in attitude to clothing ( a man wearing a scarf round his face would be made to remove it by security staff a woman in a burka was not). Both people might have obscured their face but only one would be required to remove the cover.

Not having a go at Islam so not racist. Not racist so no justification for 'deep distress'.

I have to say I would be very worried to think that some people can go through security without thorough checks just because of the clothing they are wearing! I gather these checks are done a bit more discretely by female staff.

At Mumbai all the women and children were fast-tracked and checked by female staff behind screens. My only concern was that they were processed much faster and we nearly missed our flight!

Quite right. I stand corrected. I fear that racism itself doesn't care for such definitions, but that's entirely the point: I should.

See what I mean, though, about daftness vs real intent? A person of the Muslim faith might very well be offended by such ignorance. Whatever the strength of their reaction, the offence caused is by me - and therefore it's incumbent on me to apologise. Why on earth wouldn't I? That I have no wish to act in a racist / bigoted / xenophobic manner doesn't completely absolve me from responsiobility for the effect of my comments.

Don't argue with that at all. My interpretation of the event is that racism wasn't the primary agenda - sorry if I didn't make that clear. What David Jones did was to criticise the security, in front of security personnel, and to imply that there was some kind of racist agenda that operated in favour of Muslims. That in itself was a pretty daft thing to do; equally, making a comment directly to someone allows that person to use their own discretion in response. Criticising one's colleagues means that one has less leeway, and that one is more likely to take the matter further: if someone calls me an idiot, I tend to look at why they maight have a point; if they call a colleague an idiot, the response is altogether different.

David Jones is playing the race card on this just as much as the security personnel; the actual issue is more one of daftness and a failure to engage brain before speaking.

The member of staff was described as 'deeply distressed' - what a load of testicles! This was a comment/opinion from someone who felt that security standards were being interpreted in one way for him and another for a women wearing a burka.

He does seem consistent in his story and Gatwick/BA/Police have not made any attempt to 'correct' his side of the story. I therefore chose to believe his tale.

The burka can make many people feel uncomfortable because we are brought up to pick up even subtle body language and without these signals we are at a bit of a loss! As with most things familiarity reduces or removes this discomfort as I am sure Tim can confirm. It should never be forgotten that many of us do not live in cosmopolitan areas, are not used to this type of dress and if we are going to feel uncomfortable about it an airplane is when we are most likely to feel ill at ease.

At worst this was a slightly silly comment and at best an indication of unease that someone covered from head to foot in clothing might be a security risk!

Handled appallingly and in a way to cause genuine distress to the traveler! If I were him I would not be flying with BA again and would fly from Heathrow!

Nice story, Tim - but I think more chalk and cheese than direct comparison. In your example, you were speaking directly to the person about whom you were commenting, and using gentle (and palpable) wit to defuse a relatively simple impasse. Not really much in there to get agitated about - and if the lady in question had complained, doubtless you'd have had the grace to apologise.

Imagine somebody turning up in the surgery and saying, 'I bet if I was that type of person, you'd do your job better for me'. I doubt many of us would smile sweetly and chuckle.

I'll be going on a foreign holiday in April, and I'll behave myself entirely in the airport, toe the line and be polite: I only get a week off, and have no wish to spend ANY of it having a cavity search performed. Not even at the Resort.

It sounds to me as if this was an overreaction by one person that was rapidly allowed to get out of hand by others who perhaps should know better. If the facts as seen by David Jones are correct then the member of staff is in the wrong job. If you deal with the general public you do have to be fairly thick skinned and react only if the comments made are really out of order. Shouting 'fire' in a theatre or joking about bombs going through security are good examples!

My youngest son (about 8 yrs at the time) shouting 'Brace! Brace! Brace! on landing at Southampton Airport could have got us into trouble but fortunately we got away with it!

Sadly the nutters are out in force declaring 'freedom is dead' and suggesting action against Muslims and are given a free rein when this nonsense is allowed to happen!

Gatwick are looking into the matter apparently and Mr Jones is taking legal advice!

Love the "Well it was a lady who looked just like you" comment.

This is real racism IMO. If you cannot joke about people, religion and life in general what is the world coming to? This sort of nonsense causes friction, bad feeling and enhances alienation of minorities.

Keep up the Irish/Scottish/Belgian/Essex/American/Mexican jokes and those that take offense to these comments should go on a reality awareness and get a life course!

Being angry automatically diminishes oneself. Equally, motivation behind a deed is at least as important as the deed itself: the right deed for the wrong reasons is sometimes worse than the wrong deed, committed with good intent.

But then, they would say that, the smug, revisionist, money-grabbing little gits. Is it more acceptable to say that if I'm a Buddhist?
