The dg is going crazy about its perineum and its nearly a week post op. Its a small Lhaso Apso, 10yo and the surgery was without complication. It has been somewhat resless since the surgery

Re: Post anal sacculectomy complications

[quote user="Utlendigur"]

I had one like this several years ago - again a Lhasa Apso. Wounds looked fine, no swelling, no sinuses or discharge but just really irritated over several days post op. Tried various analgesics, antibiotics etc. Each time the dog came in I carefully and gently cleaned the area with dilute pevidene. On about the fourth visit I spent slightly longer than usual scratching my head and noticed that several minutes after cleaning the perineum it turned bright red (bit like an in-season baboon's). I then remembered that pre-op it had also looked very red, but assumed at the time it was due to the asking the nurse to give it a really good clean. The bloody thing was reacting to the pevidene (which I use because I react to hibiscrub!). As soon as I stopped bathing it daily it settled down within 24hrs!

Only other thing I can think of is whether it's related to pain on defaecating? Maybe some lactulose if it is.

Thanks everyone, I have tried most of the suggestions but had not considered the hibiscrub

Re: Post anal sacculectomy complications

I'm in the decent shot of steroid camp! I may be out of order trying to teach a granny to suck eggs but if the dog is female have you checked that it has not got thrush from all the ab's and actually trying to itch/ lick vulva.

Re: Post anal sacculectomy complications

Surgery in this area is very painful in man (not personal experience thank goodness!). Some individuals seem to have lower pain thresholds than others and will make a lot of fuss anyway. These are usually the ones that make a lot of fuss about their anal glands in the first place. The tiniest dose of ACP may be helpful but I am always cautious about using this in short nosed breeds. A few crumbs is my scientific dose for this breed and give a few crumbs more to effect!

I would go with that alongside NSAIDS and tramadol or even some oramorph from a hospital (that would obviously sedate as well)
