"costs up to £35 a time"
Never knew this was possible.

New one on me, hadn't dreamt of that!

So if a "new" pet comes in with a suspicious reaction where a chip might have been an Xray might reveal foreign bodies.....

Not being facetious, sarcastic, ironic, offensive, destructive or silly either.

It may be a good way to eliminate a redundant chip when it is known, by a responsible person, that a microchip contains information distressing to the previous owner.

That's assuming there isn't a foreign body reaction to the contents of the chip pellet......

And that it isn't possible to reprogram a chip in situ

I've learn't something.

My own rescue dog has a microchip from a number of years ago. I am in the process of trying to change the ownership details to my name and address as it is a legal requirement from April for me to have him microchipped. This will cost me £15 as his microchip is registered on Petlog (though there may be a different database that charges £35) plus postage of various paperwork if it ever arrives etc. Ironically I could have chipped and registered him for free if he didn't already have a microchip, but then of course I still pay every time I move house...

When I registered my details for my rescue dog's chip with petlog I'm pretty sure they said that you pay the £15 to register and then you can change it as many times as you like for the life of the pet.

Re: Microchip "updating"

<wondering what on earth there is to find offensive in the OP or the red starred replies>

Re: Microchip "updating"

No facetiousness this time but, as I thought I had made clear, the piece in the Mail said "it can be read using a hand-held device and updated ......" giving the impression that the chip itself could be updated, after all, they put the number on the chip somehow so maybe they can change it??

Apparently not, but don't be surprised if a client, or new client, comes in and demands that you change the chip number because said client read in that font of all gospel truth, The Daily Mail........

Re: Microchip "updating"

[quote user="Anthony Todd"]

1) I assumed you were being facetious Anthony.

2) Do you mean on the chip this time or the database? If the former, as the chip is a transponder and only sends a signal to the reader when activated I would say it is inert and therefore cannot be reprogrammed or rendered inactive other than with a big hammer! If the latter, I would like to think that there would be a fail-safe system in place to prevent the unscrupulous from implanting a second chip in order to attempt to circumvent the data held for the original chip and that the data should be held in perpetuity. I have a couple of patients that have had 2 chips for one reason or another and so long as both are recorded and the data is the same for both there is no problem.

Re: Microchip "updating"

My impression, from the piece in the Daily Mail, was that the chip itself could be reprogrammed, which is what I meant to ask.
