We also now incorporate a 'practical' element into our interview as well which granted is usually just performing a couple of simple consults while being observed, but allows you to get a feel for how they interact with the owners/pets. And at the end of the day if you get it wrong you also have 3 months probationary period to determine whether they are suitable for a permanent position.

Re: Over supply of vets?

Just thinking though - I find that 1-3 years experience can be harder to judge. Some people have got over that initial fear, have learnt the communication and team-working skills of this job, have been allowed to challenge themselves and are thriving and becoming a 'good vet'. However, there are others who have not been able to undertake anything other than basic tasks (the boss does anything complicated) and who probably have less confidence and ability than they did when they qualified. How can you tell the difference at interview?

Re: Over supply of vets?

absolutely - the thing they need most is your time and patience and if circumstances don't allow that then it would be wrong to employ one.

Re: Over supply of vets?

yep new grads can be really rewarding to see grow but I have too much respect for this profession to ask one to come and work for me in a new building when we have yet to iron out the kinks!

Re: Over supply of vets?

Thanks Wynne and Hanna. The lady who is leaving came to us as a new grad 2 1/2 years ago and has done really well, so, as rest of us are 10+ years qualified, I think it is a pretty good environment for a new grad. Someone has to give them a chance to learn eh? The selection then occurs after qualification. I was told by Spanish graduate that 5000 qualify as vets every year (this does seem a lot) and the only way to get a job in Spain was to be related to another vet, set up somewhere or emigrate.

Thinking round the problem, we could all go part time, earn less than the repayment threshold (£21000) and have your debt wiped out anyway after 25 years. The hassle would be affording that camping trip to Cornwall once a year, once you've paid the RCVS/VDS/CPD providers etc etc etc

Absolutely, I said should not would! No just look at Law students right now. The country is packed to the hilt with Law grads the bulk of whom cannot get a job in law. There is also an increase in ladies working with an inevitable increase in part time/job share which should mean there will be enough jobs for UK graduates.

The other trend I've noticed in 22 years is the number of large animal jobs. They were scarce 20 years ago, now the Vet Record is full of them.

However the elephant in the room is student debt. Part Time working and a debt of £60.000 will mean that salaries for new graduates will have to increase?
