Not pedantic at all IMO. Last time I used all my fingers and toes (and those of my family to give enough fingers and toes!) 17 out of 42 is indeed less than half. I think I am right in thinking half of 42 is 21 and 17 is still less than 21. (unnecessarily sarcastic smiley)

Just to confirm, Clive's latest post is spot on.

Retention fees for last, this and next year as follows:

2010 - 2011: £294
2011 - 2012: £299
2012 - 2013: £299

(All years 1 Apr - 31 Mar)

First bit noted, Stephen, thanks. We've published a number of articles about this over the last few weeks, which you can read at: http://www.rcvs.org.uk/news-and-events/news/, the latest one being: 'RCVS overspend: an apology'

Second bit, ref 'most of the council not in private practice', is not quite right.

Council currently numbers 42, comprising:

4 Privy Council-appointed members (3 'lay' people and the CVO)
14 university-appointed members (including 8 MsRCVS, 1 RVN and 5 'lay' people)
24 elected members (all MsRCVS)

Of the latter, 17 currently work in private practice and 4 have either done so for a substantial period of time or recently retired. These members constitute 50% of the Council. You can read more about Council members at: http://www.rcvs.org.uk/about-us/rcvs-council/council-members/

And, if you'd like to stand for election to Council, you still have a week to send us your nomination!

It's about half what dentists pay for their registration, and their governing body is so disorganised disciplinary complaints are running 2-3 years in arrears.

according to my bank statement my direct debit went out for £299 for this last year.
