Hi Hanna,

I'm actively job-hunting now (unfortunately a bit far from you!) but I regularly check the Vet Record, Vet Times, VetSurgeon, Vetclick.com and then a few of the recruitment agency websites (Carlton professional, Recruit4u, Recruit4vets and Synergy) for jobs. Vetclick seems to be a pretty busy website but no idea how much it costs to advertise on it.

Sorry Hannah we're a bit too long a commute from Bristol - North Notts! And given this vet is leaving as she is too far from friends and family i would quite like someone with local ties for the next one! But thanks for the comments anyway...

I would recommend the Vet Record rather than the Vet Times as I like the way, as a job hunter, you can sign up to email updates of jobs that fit your requirements without being a member of the BVA. I don't get the Vet Times so any job advert there would pass me by.

Never used a recruitment agency before - assuming there is no charge unless we actually accept their candidate I can't see any harm in looking at what they have to offer, so feel free to pass details on.

As for nurses - interesting - we always advertise in the Vet Times and VN Times and never get a single applicant from the Vet Times - possibly what puts me off advertising in it for vets. Problem with Vet Record is I guess we'll get lots of new inexperienced folk which is really not what i need right now whereas Vet Times goes to folk in practice.

VetSurgeon ad has been viewed 69 times so far but no applicants... It is so frustrating knowing that I will be short staffed even if the right candidate applies right away.

Vet Times is a fraction of the price of the Vet Record and is about the only place we would advertise for a nurse. Not sure if it is as good for vets but most of us have a regular nose through the job ads - just in case!

Vetsurgeon the best starting point perhaps!!

If you are looking at agencies at all to help with filling the job, can I put a shout in for Julie at the Northern Locum Agency? I'm sure they are doing permanent positions now as well as locum work. I've been with them for about 7 years, and Julie is really good about matching vets up with practices so that both parties are happy :)

Arlo of course I have posted it on vet surgeon.org! Alan - the rota is a bit complicated as we now have night shifts to tie in so no 'on call'. Two weekends worked in eight, one on nights, the other on days, one night shift most weeks, with associated downtime. Hoping the shiny new place will indeed attract some decent applicants but it is difficult to explain how we work now in a short job ad! Thanks for the thoughts and hope all is well with you guys. Thanks for the thoughts generally. Turns out we're looking at the best part of £1500 to advertise in vet record as want a decent ad, so dread too think what it will be with vet times thrown in too. Still i'm sure it will be worthit if we get the right candidate...

Just a reminder to everyone:

Please post EVERY job in the VetSurgeon.org job section too. Why? In so doing, you're helping build the VetSurgeon.org job section into THE place to look for a job, which will ultimately save you money, because advertising in our job section is and will remain FREE.

Whilst I'm on the subject, why not send a note / email to whoever is in charge of recruitment at your practice, recommending they do this.

I don't expect everyone to do it out of the kindness of their heart - there are already quite a few people who have got a job through VetSurgeon.org, and it is the largest community of UK veterinary surgeons, so it does already make sense to spend a few moments posting on here.

I think Vet Times ads probably reach a greater percentage of vets than Vet Record as most practice seem to have an up to date copy hanging around the staff room! Most vets/nurses I know make the job ads the 1st port of call when flicking through-even if they are not actively looking to change roles. Just because someone is actively job hunting doesn't mean that a well written job ad won't attract the right candidate-I wasn't looking actively when I moved jobs last time but am very glad I made the move (and hope my employer is too!).

I'd still stick with the vet record although last time we advertised we got so many replies to the website ad that after only 3 days we asked the VR to remove the ad. If anything there are an excess of vets out there at the moment so you should get some good replies. Your new facilities etc will really help things as well. What's the rota etc and I'll pass the word round some local vets.

Shame it wasn't a couple of months ago you were looking as I knew of an ideal candidate back then.

I did about 8 years locum work in the UK and my preference was to look in the Vet Record, but I also used Vetlink and Kookaburra for placements. I found these two agencies best as they matched my requirements to the job well and I felt they were proactive in checking up on jobs. I also found that ethey would check up on the vets that were applying for positions so would ensure the vets were suitable for the job.

I've just moved jobs. When I was looking mainly used the vet record but also vet times. I noticed a lot of jobs further north only advertised in the vet times. I did look at recruitment agency websites but felt if they were taking a cut to place me my salary would suffer as a result. I know my replacement was sourced via an agency that approached my ex boss.
