From the HSE website:

"The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (as amended) set no specific requirements such as weight limits.
The ergonomic approach shows clearly that such requirements are based
on too simple a view of the problem and may lead to incorrect
conclusions. Instead, an ergonomic assessment based on a range of
relevant factors is used to determine the risk of injury and point the
way to remedial action."

Their pdf guide to manual handling suggests 25kg as the maximum lift for men, depending on the height and how far away from the body, with reductions for turning, repetition etc. etc. They also publish charts to assess manual handling tasks.

Also the website says:

"As an approximate guide, the capability of a two-person team is
two-thirds the sum of their individual capabilities and for a
three-person team the capability is half the sum of their individual
capabilities. Teams of more than four members are unlikely to work
successfully. If steps or slopes must be negotiated, most of the weight
may be borne by the handler or handlers at the lower end, further
reducing the capability of the team as a whole."

Re: Big

[quote user="Lorna McHardy"]

please don't tell me they are charity clinic clients?

Not this time

It had, unsurprisingly, orthopaedic issues and had gone off its back legs. Management simply not possible, even by very large, muscly owner, so I've now run out of euthatal...

And then the crem sends one guy to pick it up. That was also quite interesting.

That was a single pup delivered by caesar - bitch was so big I struggled to even tell there was a pup on palpation. The pup was huge at birth and grew at a ridiculous rate with no sibling competition. Unfortunately pts at 5yrs old with bilateral cruciate disease - two of us had to stagger out of the practice, down the alley and into the garage with it on a stretcher (receptionist posted as lookout) because we couldn't manouvre it though the indoor doorways. Has anyone noticed these dogs are always pts at weekends when there aren't many staff - and the grieving owners rush out of the door! We had another huge wolfhound - carried in by three burly builder owners, who ran out in tears - leaving me and a heavily pregnant nurse to get it into the freezer

Re: Big

Good grief, who on earth wants a pet of that size? it would be akin to having a bullock in the house.
