You know...Spain is different. Fortunately things are changin and the specialization is starting to be a reality...but, sometimes the first opinion practices are reluctant to refer cases of "exotic animals" (rabbit is an ingredient of the "authentic paella valenciana"...) unfortunately many vets still thinking in this patients as a "second division" pets (not our practice case, we´ve got a specialist). Is very frustrating to treat with some owners (not all) who prefer to ask first in the pet shop for a cheaper answer.

Please tell me were you´re friends are living, and i´ll try to look for a well qualified exotic medicine speciallist.

I´m completely sure...there´s a mistake. the seller (for personal experience...) maybe was talking about deworming (advocate??). But, here there´s no vaccination for guinea pigs.

Would rabies vaccination be appropriate for guinea pigs living in mainland Europe?

Not that I am aware of. Guinea pigs may have a high incidence of anaphylaxis to foreign proteins (personal communication) so I dont think vaccines used in other species would be appropriate.
