I have a Golden Doodle patient - he is the most dominant, unpredictable and very large dog I can remember. He bites his owners out of the blue - a bit like many Golden Retrievers I guess, but he has the loopy poodle side to add to the "fun". He has brought his owners to the brink of requesting euthanasia 3 times and counting.... Would I ever recommend anyone specifically going out to find and buy this crossbreed? NEVER!!!!

On the name front - just for the name alone I would like to see a ShiTzu x Affenpinscher - I wont spell it out, but that combo would be priceless :)

Alizin took care of that one. He bred Bulldogs, his mum bred Shih Tzu's....... He couldn't cope with naming them. True story

Bob initially I thought the trend might yield to positive results due to "hybrid vigour" but so far I think these crosses seem to have the worst of both worlds -not that I have any data to support this I hasten to add!

I think I have one (rescue dog of unknown parentage). I am fairly certain about the standard poodle part and the GR seems likely but I do make a point of telling people he is a mongrel.

I would recommend getting one if you have lots of free time and like being outdoors! He was about 2 or 3 y.o. when I got him and completely bonkers, required at least 3 hours of exercise a day for the next 5 years. I trained him to run behind my bike and found that the most effective way of burning off the endless amounts of energy. He was quite difficult to train (especially recall) but maybe that was because he was an adult when I got him.

Healthwise he has been fine, I keep his coat short but it was long when I first got him and he did have skin infections. He is a bit arthritic now but he must be about 14 y.o. Temperment is great, very sociable with people and other dogs. I have loved having him but I wouldn't give money to a breeder of any dog let alone a cross so I doubt I will end up getting another.

I also have a springer spaniel and she is calm in comparison just to let you know what you are letting yourself in for!

Unfortunately I think the cooler or funnier the "breed" name the more you can charge for it.

I had discussions with one of my clients with a Golden Doodle who wanted to call it a Labradoodle because it was black - couldn't quite get the concept that Golden was the parent....

All the Golden Doodles I've met have been loopy, had skin issues or FCPs....

I think you're looking at it from the wronf end, Martin. I firmly believe that they sit down with a list of breed names, and come up with the most inventive name combinations, then go out and buy the dogs and put them in a room together. Although that might be over-estimating the amount of research done. I mean, what IS the point of a Jug?

Do two wrongs make a right?

I wuld suspect it depends which health problems you are concerned with. Take 2 dogs of different breeds that have bad hip dysplasia then you're probably going to get hip dysplasia. Other problems would get diluted out (eg PFK deficiency in Springers)
