Off food, drinking little for the last 4 days. Vomited this morning, bringing up a rather nasty looking blood clot. On clinical exam thin, no pyrexia, severely dehydrated.
Bloods hellish!

I don't want to teach my grandmother to suck eggs, but if the cat is an ARF you need to be careful how much fluids you give it as you could easiy overperfuse it.
Yes, I'd measure urine output and if it's oliguric try diuretics and/or mannitol. If that doesn't work there's little point carrying on unless you want to try peritoneal dialysis with the vanishingly small probability it improves.

Re: Cat in renal failure.

I suspect that if this cat cannot cope with fairly aggressive fluid therapy it is because the kidneys are beyond salvation. The cat has eaten a little jelly from renal food and is sleeping rather than semi-comatose at the moment!

I fear the cat went into ARF several days ago and it has been presented very late in the course of the disease.

Correction - has eaten a couple of mouthfuls!

Re: Cat in renal failure.

I don't want to teach my grandmother to suck eggs, but if the cat is an ARF you need to be careful how much fluids you give it as you could easiy overperfuse it.

Re: Cat in renal failure.
You state its thin (how thin) and the WBC count is high, if it's cachectic then that and the WBC count would point to something more chronic like pyelonephritis than acute ethylene glycol surely? Antibiotics, fluids, fluids and more fluids but sounds like a lost cause whatever.
Thin as in not eaten for the last week thin rather than ancient chronic renal cat. Antibiotics given (Synulox). Brighter in self but I have given a very guarded prognosis.

All input gratefully received! How often do people see ethylene glycol poisoning?

Re: Cat in renal failure.

You state its thin (how thin) and the WBC count is high, if it's cachectic then that and the WBC count would point to something more chronic like pyelonephritis than acute ethylene glycol surely?
