Case 1 - A few years ago I had a cob colt die of what I thought at the time was tetanus however the presentation wasn't quite typical of tetanus. I hadn't heard of Atypical Myoglobnuria (AM) at the time

Re: Atypical Myoglobinuria

I would honestly say that it's unlikely. It's an 18 month old horse in no work and on no hard feed - it doesn't even charge around the field. The CK and AST exceed anything I've ever seen in a horse that's tied-up by a factor of at least 10. Whilst the blood results are fairly horrific there was a presentation at BEVA that suggested that they shouldn't be used as a prognostic indicator - the clinical picture was much more reliable and those horses that continued to be fairly well were likely to be the survivors whereas anything that presented a poor clinical picture, regardless of actual CK/AST levels, was a bad bet.

The kidneys worry me. The horse had very dark brown urine for 5-6 days (unfortunately the owner didn't manage to get a sample). This pretty much coincided with the period of polydipsia. Urine looks grossly normal now but I will continue to monitor TP/urea/creatinine for as long as necessary.

Has anyone got any suggestions for how long I should keep this horse stabled?

Re: Atypical Myoglobinuria

I just wonder if in case 3 this was a straight forward Azoturia rather than AM. It seems to me that the blood results and clinical signs are classically those of 'tying up' - not least the fact that it survived! May be worth looking at the horses exercise program and diet.

Yours,

Hope it gets better and keep us posted

I had thought that the owner was being overly fussy to be honest...

We used to have a competition in the practice for the highest CK from horses that had tied-up but I think the best we could manage was about 10000. This pretty much puts an end to that!

Re: Atypical Myoglobinuria

Quite impressed the lab machine didn't actually blow a gasket trying to measure it!
