looking at ethicon alternatives at the moment vicryl to polysorb etc. which products do people use, do you stick with ethicon or have you moved to an alternative.

the polysorb, biosyn, maxon etc seems comparable to vicryl etc but does

Re: vicryl alternatives

I've started using maxon having been used to vicryl + vicryl rapide.
Regarding Vicryl, it provides a 28 day claim for wound support which is unique. Polysorb's claim is 30% strength at 21 days. So if you need that extra support, it becomes critical to choose a suture with the appropriate retention profile. If interested, I'm happy to have one of our territory managers contact you with further demonstrations about the features and benefits of VICRYL. Also, VICRYL now comes in an Antibacterial version, called Vicryl PLUS, which is also unique.

If interested in a monofilament, we provide MONOCRYL or PDS- although PDS is recommended for wounds that require 6 weeks of wound support time.

We have increased our support to the veterinary profession with new territory managers, so feel free to contact me.

Re: vicryl alternatives

The practice I used to work for had used vicryl for a long time in the linea alba with no problems, they changed to polysorb and had a spate of post op heriation until they changed back. I use pds so was not effected, but the vets who has problems were very experienced and I could only put the herniation down to the change to polysorb.

I use PDS with suaged on needle for linea alba closure, but visorb for ligatures etc. I stick with monocryl with a reverse cutting needle for gingival suturing.

Re: vicryl alternatives

I use a lot of Biosyn instead of vicryl - being monofilament then tissue drag is much less, but it holds knots much better than PDS and, having less memory, is much nicer to handle. It's nice and strong, holds tensile strength for longer than vicryl but is absorbed faster. For s/c and intradermal sutures I find much less post op inflammation that with PDS. I use the reverse cutting needles which are good for most uses.

It hasn't completely replaced Vicryl - I still like vicryl rapide for eyelids etc and it lasts too long and is a bit too spikey to use for dentals.

Having said all that, my boss doesn't like it so still uses Vicryl for most stuff

Re: vicryl alternatives

Visorb is an option for Vicryl on a reel - available from your wholesaler.
