I usually make a scrotal incision and perform an open castration, and leave the tiny incisions to heal without suturing. never had any problems. I have seen others who perform a scrotal incision

Re: Ferret castration.

I use scrotal incisions and close with a dab of tissue glue because I'm a wimp! Think pretty much all techniques have been used by different vets at one time or another at my practice without any leading to an excessively high complication rate so think it is down to personal preference.

We don't have many ferrets (not that see us anyway). Jab a few with delvo every year, not sure what will happen now it's single use and bin.

Re: Ferret castration.

I don't ligate at all; just separate the vas from the vessels and tie one against the other 3 or 4 times, works well I find. Speys I do midline using vicryl, intradermal in skin, with glue as/if needed. Buphrenorphine/Metacam, no antibiotics, only recheck if problems as rescue centre staff very competent.

This practice does neutering work for a ferret rescue charity and will neuter between 5 and 10 every week. They are all socialised so they are handleable and neutered prior to rehoming. They must castrate in the order of 80 - 100 a year, and I'm not aware of any cases of adrenal disease presenting, but of course they may present at other practices in the area.

Re: Ferret castration.

Micheal Are all the jills in your practice spayed ?-or do they either breed repeatedly or die ?

Yup, me too; I also ligate the cords with no 3 or 4 metric cat gut. Suturing the skin is fiddly and introduces more foreign material for no benefit.

The only reason I have castrated ferrets is because they are pets and the males stink.

From an experience of about half a dozen I do them pre-scrotal like a bunny.
