Been assesed by a referral vet and on NSAID + more recently tramadol bid added. Bright + well in general. Fairly sensible owners and preparing for PTS at some point. Last night dog seemed more uncomfortable

Re: Osteosarcoma - pain relief

This seems to be the current favourite in Queensland, cheapish, and very effective when the others weren't, in my case.

Think I'll go for gabapentin as 3rd drug if needed - at the moment dog seems a better on tramadol tid.

Re: Osteosarcoma - pain relief

The last osteosarcoma I had I put onto NSAID, paracetemol (pardale has codine in it too), tramadol, gabapentin and amantidine then added in more codine as required. The improvement in analgesia was impressive - it went from 10/10 lame to jumping around so much that I feared it would break the leg. Once it deteriorated the owners elected for euthanasia before I gave it stronger opiates.

Bisphosphonates are reputed to be effective in some cases. I've only used them once and the 'best' one (as advised by an oncologist, Zometa) had no effect in that case and is mighty expensive. Others are cheaper but may be even less effective!

Re: Osteosarcoma - pain relief

I've had dogs on NSAID, tramadol and gabapentin to control severe pain, seems to be a good top up method.

Re: Osteosarcoma - pain relief

Bisphosphanates are used in people for osteolytic bone pain but most work is on IV agents (eg pamidronate or zaledronate)

See: The bone biologic effects of zoledronate in healthy dogs and dogs with malignant osteolysis

You could try alendronate (fosamax) orally but bioavailability is not thought to be great. Dose is 70mg every 2 days in large dogs, follow with food/water.
