I once had an anal gland blowback followed by a jet of diarrhoea - on a house call so no way of immediately getting cleaned up. To make things worse the owner thought it was funny! I always stand to one side now but if there is an annoying brat in the consult room I get them to stand round the back to they can see what I'm doing (out of interest only of course). I now wish I done that with the owner of the dog mentioned.

Bob Lehner said:

I had an interesting experience the other day - I was at home by myself and injected one of my cats with a dom/torb/ket mixture to lance a cba. I then cleverly managed to prick my finger with the needle of the completely empty syringe. It bled a little bit, so I washed it well and squeezed out as much blood as I could.

I wasn't in the least bit concerned or stressed about this - but about 10 minutes later I felt distinctly odd and woozy. I have a blood pressure monitor at home as I have to check my bp regularly - normally at rest I run at about 135/75. I took my bp and it was around 100/55 ! I sat still for about 1/2 an hour by which time it was back to normal. I am convinced that this was not a psychological response and believe I must have absorbed a tiny amount of the drug combo - literally what was in the needle - which had a fairly dramatic effect on my bp.

Another colleague once pricked her finger with a somulose syringe and spent the rest of the day in hospital.

I would say it was entirely psycosomatic, surely the volumes are so small from a needle stick rather than actual self injection that they could not have any effect? I have pricked my finger dozens of times with all manner of things including anaesthetics and pentobarbitone and never had the slightest problem (except with the Brucellosis syringe)!

Re: face full of keatmine

[quote user="Martin Atkinson"]

I don't think we should under-estimate the risks from some of the drugs we handle on a daily basis.

I'm surprised there are not far more serious incidents reported with our use of these potent products - although famously shortly after immobilon was introduced here a vet did die after accidental self-injection.

I would agree that anal gand blowback is quite horrendous, which is why I am sure to wear full face protection when over I get to close. That said I know someone hospitalised for 3 days after a somulose blowback so I guess that beats anal glands.

Re: face full of keatmine

[quote user="Martin Atkinson"]
