It is progressive and has a poor prognosis. There is often systemic amyloidosis and the liver may also be affected. It certainly is a ddx.

As for the bloods, wouldn't it be good if you could buy a dvd showing how to blood sample exotic small mammals. It would probably pay for itself after the first sample! I wonder if there is a website on exotic cpd where one could obtain such an item.

Re: Hamster with pu/pd
I'm sure I'm simply demonstrating my incompetance but how on earth do you obtain a blood sample from a hamster?

If you do manage to get a sample then given that
Treatment is tricky, surgical resection tends to result in death and canine meds are ineffective
, is there any point sampling in the first place?
Cranial vena cava with an insulin syringe works nicely - there are good pics from Vittorio Capello in BSAVA manual of rodents and ferrets showing anatomy and needle position for this technique. I always GA mine as there are too many important bits to lacerate if they decide to wiggle and I'm sure it must be pretty unpleasant to have done.

I like to confirm diagnosis - usually do it as part of a work up for skin issues. Even if it does confirm Cushings you have the option of Ketoconazole or you know to stop looking for other differentials and give up!

Measure blood ALP - >40 is considered highly suggestive of Cushings. Treatment is tricky, surgical resection tends to result in death and canine meds are ineffective. Ketoconazole has been proposed but studies are conflicting in its efficacy
